The Oklahoma Sooners picked up another routine win Saturday to end their second day of competition at the 2024 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, California.

The three-time defending national champions cruised past San Diego State 7-0 to improve to 3-0 at the 2024 edition of the prestigious event and 12-0 on the season, while extending their record winning streak to 65 games.

Jayda Coleman and Tiare Jennings did much of the heavy lifting for the Oklahoma offense against the Aztecs at Big League Dreams Cathedral City’s Wrigley Field, combing for four hits and six RBIs.

Coleman’s second-inning base hit scored Maya Bland and Rylie Boone to give the Sooners all the cushion they’d need, and they remained quiet until the fifth inning, when Jennings blasted a two-run home run to center field.

Jennings added a two-run double the following inning and then scored Oklahoma’s final run on an Ella Parker single. 

Jennings was 3 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs and continues to climb her way through the Oklahoma record books. Her performance Saturday moved her into second place on the career RBIs list at OU with 256. Jocelyn Alo is the all-time leader for the Sooners with 323.

In all, Oklahoma had 12 hits against San Diego State and left eight runners on base.

Kierston Deal pitched all seven innings for the Sooners to pick up the win, and she’s now 2-0 for the year. She gave up three hits and struck out six Aztecs. Two of San Diego State’s hits were singles by Bella Espinoza. 

SDSU faced the Sooners with a committee of three pitchers, with the loss going to reigning Mountain West Pitcher of the Year Allie Light. Light started and finished the game, going 1 2/3 innings total. She gave up six hits, five runs (three earned) and walked two.

The Sooners waltzed into the 2024 Mary Nutter Classic a day later than much of the 30-team field and picked up two quick wins Friday to announce their arrival in Cathedral City.

On paper, those wins Friday night were blowouts – 9-3 over a ranked Mississippi State and a five-inning 10-2 rout of Wisconsin – while San Diego State squeaked out a pair of 3-2 wins over Missouri and Nebraska (eight innings) on Thursday and Friday, respectively, and then added a five-inning 9-0 performance against Bethune-Cookman on Friday afternoon.

San Diego State (now 8-6 in 2024) entered Saturday’s matchup with confidence gained over the past few days and likely the highest of expectations to be the one to steal the spotlight from Oklahoma. The Aztecs were forced to play without Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year Mac Barbara, who was sidelined by an injury she suffered Friday night.

Saturday’s meeting between San Diego State and Oklahoma was the 13th time in history the two teams have faced each other, with the last time coming in 2019. OU now holds an 12-1 advantage in the series. 

As two of the 30 teams that have converged on Big League Dreams Cathedral City to compete in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic from Feb. 22-25, the weekend is winding down for many.

Oklahoma was the last hurrah for SDSU, while the Sooners are scheduled to close out the event with a pair of games Sunday – Seattle at noon Eastern and Loyola Marymount at 2:30 p.m. EST.

Oklahoma Softball Holds Off SDSU In First Inning

A single and a hit batter put two runners on for San Diego State in the top of the first inning against Oklahoma, but the Aztecs are unable to capitalize, stranding both runners.

San Diego Strength Of Schedule 

In SDSU’s first 13 games this year, 10 have come against teams that made the NCAA Tournament in 2023, with the ultimate matchup coming Saturday against Oklahoma.

Not only did the Sooners make the NCAA Tournament, they won it – for the third consecutive time.

USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll

The latest USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll came out this week, and Oklahoma continues its stranglehold on the top spot.

The Sooners, who entered the 2024 on a 53-game winning streak, are 11-0 to start the new campaign.

San Diego State was not among the top 25 in the most recent rankings, but the Aztecs did land in the “others receiving votes” section.

Who Was Mary Nutter?

Mary Nutter was an All-American softball player and a pioneer in the sport. 

She was a coach at Pittsburgh State and was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1988 and the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1997.

Nutter died in 2012.
