The weather finally is warming up in the Northeast, and that means it’s time for the UConn softball team to play the first home games of its 2024 campaign. Oh, and they’re also kicking off their BIG EAST slate with three games against the DePaul Blue Demons. 

UConn is just back from a stint at the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu, where the Huskies turned in a perfect record (6-0) with wins against Cleveland State, Hawaii and New Mexico. The surge helped UConn move past a five-game losing skid that included three one-run losses.

The Huskies’ season has featured visits to Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Hawaii. They’re 10-11 overall and ready to settle in for a five-game homestand. After DePaul departs, Central Connecticut (March 19) and Yale (March 20) will stop by.

DePaul’s season has not started strongly. In fact, the Blue Demons opened the year with nine losses and a cancellation in their first 10 games. They’re now 6-16 overall and 2-1 in BIG EAST action – a series win over Georgetown last weekend at home in Chicago.

Early in the 2024 BIG EAST softball standings, Villanova leads the way at 3-0, while Creighton, Butler and DePaul are 2-1. The conference includes nine teams, and UConn is the only team yet to play a conference game. 

UConn and DePaul will tangle for one game each day (Fri-Sun) at Burrill Family Field at the Connecticut Softball Complex. Neither team was ranked in the latest USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll.

In looking at the newest RPI (Rating Percentage Index), UConn remained at No. 151, while DePaul slid six spots to No. 226. The RPI is based on the winning percentage and strength of schedule for each team.
