The Villanova softball team may have a mediocre overall record this season, but the Wildcats are winning at the right time – in conference play – and they’re the early leaders in the BIG EAST standings.

The Wildcats are 11-11 in 2024 against a variety of opponents, including No. 6 Duke and No. 11 Alabama, but they’re 3-0 in conference play after a sweep of Seton Hall at home last weekend that helped Villanova earn some redemption. 

The Wildcats saw their 2023 campaign come to an end against the Pirates in the final of the BIG EAST Championship (6-1).

Villanova now will take its show on the road and try to find the same success in Rhode Island against a Providence College team that is 1-2 in conference play and 7-9 overall.

Providence opened the 2024 season with three straight losses and only managed consecutive victories once so far. The Friars’ conference schedule began with a pair of losses to Butler, but they were able to claim the final game of the series, 9-7, on Tuesday.

Only time will tell if a short break will help Providence or kill the team’s momentum, as the Friars’ week has included postponed games against Yale (March 12) and Bryant University (March 13 doubleheader). 

Either way, they’ll be well-rested for their home opener against Villanova. They’ll play one game each day this weekend (Fri-Sun). Neither team was ranked in the latest USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll.

In looking at the newest RPI (Rating Percentage Index), Villanova landed at No. 84 (down two spots), while Providence slid 11 places to No. 195. The RPI is based on the winning percentage and strength of schedule for each team.
