Campbell is new to the Coastal Athletic Association and immediately making its presence known in the conference’s softball standings. It’s early, but the Camels are 3-0 and tied for the top spot with UNCW and Elon.

The success for Campbell shouldn’t come as a surprise, as the Camels were dominant in the Big South, where they won seven conference tournament titles from 1993-2023, including three consecutive (2021, 2022, 2023), before making the move to the CAA for this season.

Overall, the transition hasn’t been the smoothest for Campbell, which is 11-12-1 this season after a memorable 42-18 mark in 2023. Is it the schedule? Pressure? Level of competition?

The Camels actually opened the year with six straight losses, won a game against UConn then lost another three. 

Regardless, conference play is here, and Campbell is heating up at the right time. The nine-game stretch of CAA action began with a road sweep of Stony Brook, and the Camels now will welcome Towson to their own home turf in North Carolina.

The Tigers have struggled a bit in 2024, however, and while they’re coming off a win this week against Delaware State, their conference mark is 1-2 after a recent series with Hofstra. Overall, Towson is 9-13, but the Tigers won two of their last three games.

Neither Campbell, nor Towson, was ranked in the latest USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll.

In looking at the newest RPI (Rating Percentage Index), Campbell is up four spots to No. 131, while Towson dropped nine spots to No. 273. The RPI is based on the winning percentage and strength of schedule for each team.
