Justus’ blog: back to the fall routine (9/8)

Auburn-bound Justus Perry, a junior infielder from Prior Lake High in Minnesota, had a great summer capped off by helping her Birmingham Thunderbolts 97 team finish in the top 10 at this year’s PGF 16U Nationals.

In today’s blog, Justus – a strong candidate to make the 2016 Hot 100 coming out this month – starts off with an acronym of “Summer” to highlight some of the best things of the past few months and the details what her daily schedule is light now.

And she also reveals the one big change impacting her life now!

Justus is one of the small group of passionate, dedicated club players who travel across state borders as she and her father regularly travel the 2,000 mile round-trip to and from Birmingham, Ala. to practice and play with the Thunderbolts.

Perry has been a 2nd team “AAA” All-State selection the last two years for one of the state’s top teams and had originally committed to Arizona State, but with the coaching change and Clint Myers now at Auburn, she’s headed to the SEC and will play in the same state where her club team practices.

Also, last summer at the PGF Nationals we met the talented sophomore and learned about an unusual talent she has for being able to take any word and immediately repeat it backwards!

Check out this video to see Justus hear a word and repeat it backwards!

Remembering the memories in Alabama

As the final summer hours begin to wind down, I fall back into a common day-to-day routine: waking up at 6 am, hitting off a tee in my garage, and then off to Prior Lake High school.

There’s a big difference now that I am 16. I have my driver’s license, which is a huge responsibility. I’m extremely excited to be able to drive myself to and from places I need to go.

When my long day at school comes to an end, I am off to condition, lift weights, and work on agility with my personal trainer. I have only a few months to work on core, strength and speed before the high school and summer seasons begin.

When I get home, it is time to hit with my dad in the garage off a tee. I will continue to work and improve on the knowledge I obtained over the summer, working on pitch selection and my stance.

It is then time to hit the books. I am excited to be taking Spanish IV this year and a Criminal Justice class. I will also be taking a prep class to get ready for the ACT exam in February.

With the fall season of softball right around the corner, I will be playing with the Birmingham Thunderbolts again. Our returning team will be playing 18U together. I am truly blessed to be able to play with all my best friends again for another year.

I can’t wait to return back to Birmingham, because I have not seen my teammates in over a month. Being half way across the country from some of your best friends and teammates really makes you miss the work you put in with them all summer. The work that helped accomplish what we all have done in such a short amount of time.

Seeing my teammates, my friends and myself grow as players and people over the summer, is something every athlete will tell you is an unforgettable experience.
