Rising Canadian Star: 2019 P/2B Kianna Jones
FloSoftball features Kianna Jones as Canada's rising star in the class of 2019
When I asked Canada Futures head coach Joni Frei whom she thought was one of the best players in Canada, she said without hesitation, "Kianna Jones."
"She's a coach's dream," Frei said. "She's a great athlete. She's dedicated. She's resilient."
Before softball, Kianna Jones participated in dance and gymnastics, but that career was short-lived. Rather than sticking to the dance routine, Imagine a little blonde Jones running around the dance studio.
Her parents channeled Jones' rambunctious energy toward softball where she could run bases, chase fly balls, and field ground balls.
Jones realized, "There's so many different aspects of the game that you can learn from. Every day you can learn something new."
The most influential person in Jones' softball development is her dad, Brian Jones. He helped her set up an NCSA account to get all of her recruiting info online for more coaches to see.
Since she's set up the account, more opportunities are available for her to get recruited. Coaches are inviting her to more camps, but the family is being selective about her upcoming opportunities.
One of the biggest challenges about playing in Canada is the country's smaller number of teams compared to the United States. In Canada, her team will play in tournaments of six teams opposed to showcases in the U.S. that feature up to several hundred teams.
"You have to go down to the States if you want to pursue softball," Jones said.
During the fall, she traveled with Canada Futures to several different college campuses in the South. The tour gave her a glimpse at what college life would be like in the U.S.
Jones has taken unofficial visits to Washington and Florida State. She plans on attending the University of Oregon softball camp later this month.
When asked about what she looks for in a school she said, "My dream job is to be a marine biologist. So I'm looking for a program that has what I love to pursue, great academics, and a family-type team. They play the game, because they love it."
Her love and passion for the game stretches well beyond the softball field and into her community, where she volunteers hours of her time to help U6 and U10 teams in the area. Frei praised Jones for being a great ambassador for the sport.
