Rising Star: 2019 P/OF Alicyn Grete Ahead of the Curve
Alicyn Grete was a player who came on our radar during our research for the 2019 Hot 100 by coach Bill Hoopes. She boasts an impressive resumé that includes participating in soccer, volleyball, and weightlifting.

Grete started weightlifting in the sixth grade because she wanted to get stronger become a pitcher. Now she can squat 125 lbs., bench press 120 lbs., and clean and jerk 135 lbs.

Playing multiple sports has it's challenges but she finds that playing other sports gives her a "break" from softball. Grete adds, "Some of the skills that I learned from playing other sports are actually useful in softball."

Her real passion is softball. Grete started playing in the Little League for softball. But after coach told her she couldn't pitch because she was too small, her parents decided to put her in travel ball.

After that experience, Grete was filled with motivation to achieve what other coaches didn't believe was possible. Her parents supported her dream of pitching but understood that her dream required lots of practice. They would go to the field nearly everyday to practice pitching.

"I like the battle. You're not only battling against the batters. You're also battling against yourself because you have to stay mentally strong throughout the whole game. That's one of the hardest things. Not only do you have to make sure that you're keeping yourself strong mentally but you also have to help keep up the entire team because you're the pitcher." Grete explained why she has such a love and dedication to pitching.

Grete's speed ranges from 60-62 mph with a change around 48 mph. She has five different pitches and played in some of the best tournaments in the south east finishing with a 1.7 ERA in 2016. She led the team in strikeouts. Grete is more of a spinner when it comes to pitching.

Offensively, her speed is one of her greatest assets. A spark plug on offense, Grete can slap and hit for power. Every at-bat she has a plan and she sticks with that plan. "I've learned through experience that if you don't stick with the plan you're usually less confident and bad things happen." Grete says.
