Day 1: Ohio Outlaws Invitational Recap

Outlaws PA 03 vs Cincy Slammers 03

Taking extra bases puts immense pressure on your opponent.  Just ask the Outlaws PA 03 12U team.
In their first game of the Ohio Outlaws Summer Invitational, the Outlaws PA 03 stole three bases in the top of the first, including a double-steal of home, en route to a 4-1 victory.

Outlaws shortstop Anna Resnick led off the game with a line drive to the left field fence. Unfortunately for Resnick, the ball rolled under the fence for a ground rule double, after Resnick cruised into third with a triple. Resnick later scored on an infield error off the bat of Courtney Poulich, who scored the second run of the inning on a double-steal of home. 2-0 middle of the 1st.

Resnick was very happy with the win and looking forward to the weekend.

“I’m excited!” said Resnick. “It starts us off good. That was a good team. They’ve beaten us before, but we came back strong (today).”
Lily Rockwell added a pair of RBI singles for the Outlaws and stated that clutch hitting is key to victory.

“As a really good hitter, you really need to make sure that every ball you swing at is a strike,” said Rockwell. “And some of the balls, if you could see them really well, looked like beach balls. So with runners on base it’s really important to get them in, to get ahead of the team. And to set the tone.”

Delaney Nagy, who took the mound in place of injured pitcher Gianna Sciullo, threw a solid six innings for the Outlaws PA. Nagy surrendered one run while scattering six hits and was benefited by three great defensive plays, including two runners gunned down at the plate.

Outlaws 02 vs Ohio Stampede 02

If you watch an Outlaws 02 game, you’ll probably hear their fans yelling “great job Rookie! Keep it up rookie!”

Now, they’re not cheering for a 1st-year player or joking about someone’s nickname. They’re actually yelling for standout pitcher Madison Roukey (pronounced “Rookie”)….and you better get used to hearing her name too. A lot!

After giving up a 1st inning run, off a bloop hit & double down the line, Roukey settled in and paced the Outlaws to a 6-3 victory over Ohio Stampede 02.
Roukey (class of 2021) took her pitching to another level after surrendering that 1st inning run.

“I wasn’t really mad,” said Roukey. “ It just made me more motivated to play harder and to push to not let anyone else score.”

in the bottom of 2nd , The Outlaws got on the board on an RBI single by Katie Deardorff & took the lead when Deardorff later scored from 2nd on a sacrifice attempt that the Stampede defense had difficulty with.

The Outlaws used some small ball to pull away in the bottom of 5th with Raquelle Seamon, Kylie Gallagher, Lindsey Hendrix and Cameron Siemer all scoring.
Roukey threw six innings, striking out 11, while giving up three runs (2 from wild pitches) and just four hits. Only one inning did The Stampede have multiple runners on base.

The Outlaws believe in Roukey, including shortstop Megan Payne (Northridge HS – 2020)

“Maddie did great!” said Payne. “She threw a great game. It really helps the bats come alive when we have confidence like that in the field.”
Payne added that, if you’re a good softball player or team, the Ohio Outlaws Summer Invitational is the place to be.

“Warren Wolff does a great job of bringing D1 coaches here to see wonderful girls play and show coaches the talent that they have,” stated Payne. “This was the most I’ve ever been excited to come to a tournament because it has so  much opportunity for young girls like us  -  to get showcased in front of D1 college coaches.

“I feel like it’s important because it gets us out there earlier than what it used to be,” added Payne.  “And it lets the coaches see us as we’re developing through the game.”

Wizards Blackswamp vs Outlaws PA Premier 14U

It took a few innings, but when the Outlaws PA Premier 14U offense woke up, they were a runaway freight-train in their 10-2 victory over Wizards Blackswamp.
Heading into the bottom of 4th trailing 2-1, the Outlaws put the ball in play with three consecutive bunts, the last resulting in a force play at home. Then, after a strikeout and walk to load the bases, third baseman Mikayla Fraley smacked a 2-run single to give the Outlaws a 3-2 lead.

Shortstop Sammi Adams followed up with a 2-run triple to give the Outlaws a 5-2 lead after four innings.

In the bottom of the 5th, the first 5 batters reached base and scored highlighted by a 3-run double from Corin Tom.

The Wizards took an early 1-0 lead as leadoff hitter Aubrey Shroyer singled, stole 2nd & 3rd, then scored on a wild pitch.

After The Outlaws answered with a run in the bottom of the 2nd, Wizards catcher Molly Bytwerk (Anthony Wayne HS - 2019) quickly took the lead back by blasting a solo home run to straight away center.

Unfortunately for the Wizards, that would be all their scoring.

Outlaws catcher Hayleigh Karcher gave a great philosophy on the Outlaws’ mindset this weekend.

“I think that it honestly is just us working on what we can do better,” said Karcher.  “And improving and just us being ourselves and having fun. But also learning stuff that we didn’t know before and improving on our weaknesses.

“I can’t lie. I like to win, but winning is not everything. It’s all about the fundamentals and if it was a good game.
