Week 3: FAB 50 High School Rankings
By Mark Tennis
It was good news and bad news for the FAB 50 based on what happened in last weekend’s Desert Mountain Invitational tournament in Arizona.
The bad news is that a lot of changes had to be contemplated for this week’s national rankings when FAB 50 No. 2 Pinnacle of Phoenix was beaten in the title game 1-0 by last week’s No. 18 squad from Hamilton of Chandler.
It’s good news, however, because Hamilton one week previously had played many of the top teams in California at the Dave Kops Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City, Ariz. That creates a lot of head-to-head results to look at, which may come in very handy at the end of the season. If Hamilton, for example, were to go on to win the Arizona Class 6A state title, it’s win over Mission Viejo may be the difference in being ranked higher than the Diablos if they were to win the CIF Southern Section Division I championship. Hamilton also had losses at the TOC to Los Alamitos (Calif.) and Orange Lutheran (Calif.).
There will be even more possible showdowns coming up in the next three weeks that could greatly impact the national rankings. No. 1 Norco (Calif.) and No. 4 Amador Valley (Calif.) will both be in the Michelle Carew Classic in Southern California while many of the top Florida teams will be at the Kissimmee Klassic.
Teams That Dropped Out From Previous Rankings:
Previous No. 14 Eagle (Eagle, Idaho); No. 15 Plano West (Plano, Texas); No. 16 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.); No. 19 Angleton (Angleton, Texas); No. 23 Clovis (Clovis, Calif.); No. 34 Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, Calif.); No. 39 Steinbrenner (Lutz, Fla.); No. 47 Daphne (Daphne, Ala.).
