Washington Shuts Out Alabama And Earns Series Sweep
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Three home runs led to a 3-0 win and two-game series sweep for No. 9 Washington over No. 12 Alabama Saturday night in Tuscaloosa.
The sweep marked Washington's (34-10) first over Alabama (37-11) since 2007 when they defeat them in two games at the NCAA Super Regionals.
Ali Aguilar, Julia DePonte and Sis Bates each hit solo shots during the two-hour game to help the Huskies earn the win.
Taran Alvelo (21-6) started in the circle for the Purple and Gold and pitched 5.2 innings. She earned the win after striking out five batters.Madi Schreyer came in during the fourth inning and pitched 1.1 innings for the Dawgs.
Aguilar got things started immediately when she hit a solo home run off the first pitch thrown from Alabama starter Sydney Littlejohn (14-4).Fifth inning lead-off hitter, DePonte, blasted a solo home run to extend the Huskies' lead to 2-0.
Midway through the fifth inning the game was suspended for 90 minutes due to lighting in within close proximity of Rhoads Stadium.In the sixth inning, Bates hit a one-out solo homer to right field, her third of the season, to extend the Huskies' lead to 3-0.Centerfielder Kelly Burdick flashed the leather twice against the wall in the final two innings to prevent three Alabama runs from coming in and tying the ball game.
Next weekend, the Huskies will return to conference play when they travel to Berkeley, Calif., to face the California Golden Bears. The series will begin on Friday, April 28 at 4 p.m. PT. The series will continue on Saturday at 12 p.m. PT and conclude on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT.
