From Wrestling To Softball, Jocelyn Alo Explains Championship Move To OU

Jocelyn Alo, the sensational hitter from Hawaii, is transitioning to Oklahoma next season to play college softball for the WCWS champion Sooners.

But why would one of the top high school hitters in the country not attend a Pac-12 school closer to Hawaii? And why would she opt for a place with no beaches and a completely different culture?

While Hawaii and Oklahoma may seem different, Alo and the Sooners have one big thing in common: championships.

Alo won a state softball title with Campbell High School in Hawaii, she was named the 2017 Hawaii Softball Player of the Year, and she was part of the OC Batbusters Stith team that just won the 18U USA Elite World Fastpitch Championship.

But Alo has a winning pedigree in another sport, too: she was a state champion wrestler. If you know anything about amateur wrestling, the state of Oklahoma is a natural fit.

Lastly, there is the Sooners softball part of the equation. The Sooners have won back-to-back WCWS titles and are expected to compete for another title in 2018. Alo is used to competing for championships year in and year out, and that's what she'll get at OU.

Jocelyn found the right place for her and is confident that her hitting skills will translate to the next level. Don't be surprised if she helps lead the Sooners to another WCWS Championship during her time in Oklahoma.

5 Big Questions with Jocelyn Alo

What drew you to the Sooners program to make the big move from Hawaii to Oklahoma?
When you're from Hawaii and lived there all your life sometimes you just want to get away and explore something new. I also wanted to go to a school where I was going to get my degree and compete at the highest level of softball.

How do you think your hitting success at the high school level will translate to college softball?
I think if I just keep doing my thing and working hard that I will be just fine in college.

In the important role of catcher, what mentality do you bring to the softball field?
The mentality that I have is that when things seem tough to not panic. I also always tell myself that I can do it and I trust myself, my team, and coaches.

What is your leadership style both on the field and off the field to make sure your team is prepared to compete?
As a senior I have shown a lot of leadership, especially to the younger girls. Also, just to lead by example and not do anything that would put me in a bad situation; always make the right choice.

What drew you to wrestling? And, have you incorporated any aspects of amateur wrestling into your softball career?

I actually did wrestling before I did baseball or softball. My dad also wrestled in high school, so of course he was going to have his kids wrestle. Some aspects I have incorporated from wrestling to softball is not to give up when things get tough.

In wrestling, it's super tough. I had to cut about 15 pounds in one week to make weight and I barely ate anything and just worked out to lose the weight. When you're starving and thirsty, things get pretty tough and the fact that I've pushed through that and made it just shows how mentally tough wrestling is. So, I incorporated that mental toughness into softball.
