Fanning out to three different weights enabled twins Cole and Connor Mirasola and Askren Wrestling Academy teammate Aeoden Sinclair to monopolize Wisconsin’s D1 upperweight titles during the past three seasons. 

Now Sinclair and the Mirasola brothers are taking the same approach in Las Vegas in an attempt to capture U20 titles this weekend at the U.S. Open. 

Sinclair — a Missouri recruit who won his third Wisconsin state title in February at 215 pounds — has made the cut down to 86 kilograms (189.6 pounds), where he’s one of the favorites this weekend. 

So, too, are the Penn State-bound Mirasolas at their respective weight classes — Connor at 92 kilograms and Cole at 97. 

For all three, it’s a return to their age-group level after competing during the past month on the Senior circuit. 

Sinclair went 2-2 at 86 kilos at the Last Chance Olympic Trials Qualifier. Cole Mirasola placed fourth at the same tournament at 97 kg. Connor Mirasola competed last weekend at the Olympic Trials, where he dropped both of his matches at 86 kilograms but managed to break through the steely defense of Aaron Brooks, scoring five points against the four-time NCAA champ and 2024 Olympian. 

86 kilograms

Sinclair has occupied the top spot in the national high school rankings at 190 pounds since notching a win over Connor Mirasola last summer at Who’s Number One. He’s one of seven ranked high school wrestlers registered in a deep 86-kilogram field this weekend. Along with three other top-10 preps — #4 Tucker Hogan, #6 Cade Ziola and #10 Eddie Neitenbach — the bracket could include college wrestlers such as Max McEnelly (Minnesota), Josh Barr (Penn State), Ryder Rogotzke (Ohio State), Daschle Lamer (Cal Poly), Jersey Robb (Oklahoma State), Tate Naaktgeboren (Iowa State) and Lucas Condon (Wisconsin). 

McEnelly was the runner-up at 86 kg in last year’s tournament. He’s coming off a 15-0 freshman season at Minnesota that included four open tournament titles. 

Barr went 14-0 this past season during his rookie year at Penn State. 

92 kilograms 

After taking on Brooks and NCAA champ Max Dean last weekend at the Olympic Trials, Connor Mirasola steps into a 92-kilogram bracket in Vegas that could include two other top-10 preps — #3 Karson Tompkins and #8 Cayaen Smith — and several others who fared well on the national scene before they stepped into college wrestling. 

Minnesota’s Gavin Nelson is back after placing fourth last year at 92 kg. Columbia’s Jack Wehmeyer finished seventh in the same bracket. Sonny Sasso’s freshman year at Virginia Tech included a sixth-place finish at the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. 

97 kilograms. 

While the 97-kilogram bracket might not be deep — #3 Cole Mirasola is the lone ranked high school wrestler on the registration list — the weight includes the returning champion from a year ago. Camden McDanel outscored his five opponents by a combined 52-2 count en route to a title last year in Las Vegas. The 97-kilogram field also includes Virginia’s Steven Burrell Jr., who placed fifth last year in Las Vegas at this weight and reached the finals of the U20 World Team Trials.
