Saturday’s Champions Cup Blog: Rained Out

Harvard_Rained_OutI did a live blog from Day 4 at the Champions Cup on Saturday, July 18, at Harvard Park and Bill Barber Park in Irvine, Calif. Here’s how it all went down:

RAINED OUT

The remaining games on the schedule for Saturday at the Champions Cup have been called due to rain. The forecast doesn’t look good for tomorrow with a 60 percent chance of rain. You can’t really get mad at the weather because California is in such dire need of rain. ASA Players Association director Lorrie Ivie just told me they are going to try to get makeup games in on Sunday at Harvard Park. We’ll see. Stay tuned.

Batbusters_logoBATBUSTERS-JACKSON ON TO ROUND 3

Batbusters-Jackson scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to break the game open and went on to a 5-2 win over Lakewood Firecrackers Gold in a second round game.

Grand Canyon-commit Hailey Freeman had an RBI single, West Florida-commit Jacquelynne Poling had a two-run single and Eileen Barrera added an RBI single during the four-run rally for the Batbusters.

The game was played with a steady drizzle that picked up as soon as the game ended. It’s not quite enough to postpone the games, but its enough for everybody without an umbrella or cover to feel pretty soggy.

MASS RAPIDS ADVANCES

We’re getting hit with light rain over here at Harvard Park, but it might as well be described as a torrential downpour in drought-riddled California. I mean, it never rains in Southern California. I guess the weather gods were trying to make the East Coasters feel welcome.

Post University-bound Leslie Denis tossed a four-hitter to lead Central Mass Rapids Gold (Mass.) to a 4-0 win over The Next Level (Calif.) in the first round of bracket play at the Champions Cup on Saturday, July 18, at Harvard Park.
Post University-bound Leslie Denis tossed a four-hitter to lead Central Mass Rapids Gold (Mass.) to a 4-0 win over The Next Level (Calif.) in the first round of bracket play at the Champions Cup on Saturday, July 18, at Harvard Park.

Speaking of East Coasters, Post University-bound Leslie Denis pitched a four-hitter with two strikeouts and one walk to help Central Mass Rapids Gold (Mass.) shut out The Next Level (Calif.), 4-0, in the first round of single-elimination bracket play.

Casey Maggiore broke a scoreless tie with a sacrifice fly to left field in the top of the sixth and Central Mass Rapids added three runs in the top of the seventh, which included RBI singles from Niagra University-bound Jen Szilagyi and Umass Lowell-bound Ashley Smits.

Central Mass Rapids plays Breeze (Calif.) in Round 2 at 2 p.m.

WELCOME, TO ANOTHER EDITION OF THUNDERDOME!!!

ThunderdomeWe’ve reached the Thunderdome stage of the Champions Cup. That’s right, it’s single-elimination bracket play, which means two teams enter, one team leaves.

Corona Angels-Tyson (Calif.), Mililani Prep (Hawaii), Firecrackers-Kevin (Calif.), American Pastime Gold (Calif.), KG Hitters-Kiko (Calif.), Salt Lake Pegasus (Utah), North Idaho Xtreme (Ida.), Sorcerer-Williams (Calif.), Courage (Calif.), Cal A’s-Paula (Calif.), Lady Hustle-Marshall (Calif.), Teamsmith-KC (Calif.), So Cal Filly’s (Calif.) and Guava Jam (Hawaii) have emerged as the top contenders to take the Champions Cup 18U title after three days of pool play games.
