SATURDAY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Class 2A Championship
Aucilla Christian (Monticello) 11, Grandview Prep (Boca Raton) 0

The Florida 2A title game was practically over before most fans had a chance to settle into their seats.

Aucilla Christian was state-runners up last year but made sure there wouldn’t be any chance of finishing second again. And the championship win was the first state title won by any sports team at the school in its 45-year history.

The Lady Warriors blew open the game in the top of the first by scoring seven runs and Grandview Prep didn’t help its own cause by committing four errors in the game.

Three Christian batters had a pair of hits and Abigail Morgan had a big two-run triple to highlight the first inning.

The game was called after five-innings and Elizabeth Hightower was as strong in the circle as the offense was in supporting her. She only allowed two hits and two walks while striking out seven in the win.

Class 4A Championship
Coral Springs Charter 3, West Nassau (Callahan) 1

Coral Springs did just enough offensively to win, putting single run on the board in the first, second and fifth innings which was more than enough for pitcher Allison Muraskin.

Muraskin gave up only three hits in the seven inning complete game victory while striking out seven. The strong performance Saturday was on the heels of her complete game shutout Friday in a 5-0 win over Fort Pierce Lincoln.

Amanda Flynn had a big RBI double for the Panthers which finished undefeated at 29-0-1 and won its first state softball title in school history.

Class 6A Championship
Forest (Ocala) 8, Chamberlain (Tampa) 7

The last game Saturday night ended up being one of the most exciting games of the entire tournament as Forest and Chamberlain went back and forth until the Wildcats held on for the thrilling one-run title win.

Forest Wildcats took the 2015 6A Florida state championship.

Forest scored in the top of the first but the Chiefs answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first.

That score held until the top of the fifth when Forest exploded for five runs, including a home run by pitcher Morgan White, and a seemingly safe 6-2 lead.

However, Chamberlain scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game on a hit by Reganne McCarl who went 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Chiefs.

Forest bounced right back for the eventual winning runs in the top of the sixth and, despite Hope Hernandez scoring for the Chiefs in the bottom of the 7th, White – who gave up just two earned runs and was hurt by five Forest errors – was able to close the door for the exciting win.

In a losing cause, Jenna Brownell, the senior going to North Florida, had a strong game for the Chiefs, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.

The Newsome Wolves won the Florida 8A title.

Class 8A Championship
Newsome (Lithia) 5, Coral Reef (Miami) 1

Newsome jumped on the board with two runs in the top of the third, added a single run in the fourth and two insurance runs in the last inning to win the Class 8A title Saturday night.

The offensive star for the Wolves was pitcher Cassidy Davis who, hitting in the three spot, went 2-for-4 with a 7th inning home run and three RBI. Maddy Lynn also did well, going 2-for-3 with double and an RBI in the top of the 4th to extended the Newsome lead to 3-1.

The Wolves used two pitchers to nail down the win: Davis, who scattered four hits over 5 2/3 innings with four K’s and one earned run while Claire Feldman closed the championship game with a perfect final 1 1/3 inning.

THURSDAY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Class 1A Championship
Chiefland 3, Jay 2

History repeated itself at the 1A level as, like last year, Chiefland beat Jay for the crown.

In 2014, the score was 9-2; this year’s game was much different as the title rematch was a thriller that went overtime before the Lady Indians pulled off the 3-2 victory in eight innings at Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Fla.,

Lauren Stalvey was the winning pitcher as she went all eight innings giving up 10 hits but only allowing one earned run. E Hallman sparked the offense going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

With two outs in the bottom of the 8th, Takiya London, a 6-foot-3 sophomore stood on second and when Samantha Rolfe singled to right, London stormed around third base and ignored the “hold” sign before coming across for the game-winning run.

Watch out for Chiefland for the next few years too– six of the starters are only sophomores.

Class 3A Championship
Lakeland Christian 6, Westminster Christian (Miami) 5

Westminster Christian was the defending champions and made it interesting as it trailed 6-3 going into the bottom of the seventh and scored two runs and loaded the bases with two outs.

However, pitcher Kristen Beachem closed the door when she got the final out via a pop up to third giving the school its first ever softball state title ever. Beachem pitched a complete game eight-hitter and struck out 10.

The Vikings were ahead only 3-2 going into the top of the sixth but added some cushion to their lead when Emily McKinney and Brooke Benton singled and Caroline Watson followed with a two-run drive to center.

Class 5A Championship
Baker County (Glen St. Mary) 1, American Heritage (Plantation) 0

Another school getting its first ever softball state title was Bake County, but it didn’t come easy.

Pitcher Macy Jackson for the Lady Cats and Jenna Goodrich of Heritage didn’t allow a run going into the final inning.

Brandie Callaway singled for BC to score freshman Tori Richardson who had reached after getting plunked in the elbow.

Jackson was on all night: 50 of her 77 pitches were strikes and she allowed only three hits and one walk.

Goodrich, the standout senior headed to Georgia Tech, was also dominant, giving up five hits and one walk while striking out six in the losing effort.

Class 7A Championship
Tate (Cantonment) beat Sarasota 8-1

The only game on Thursday that wasn’t a one-run game was at the 7A level as Tate scored a pair of runs in the third and fifth innings and then blew open the game with four runs in the top of the seventh.

Five of those runs came from pitcher Victoria Perkins who went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of singles and a triple.

In the circle Perkins was equally dominant, pitching a complete game with five hits allowed, no earned runs and only one walk. She did strike out five too to help her own cause.
