Amazing “Turner Tuesday” family coincidence! (4/24)

Tuesday, April 14, 2015 will forever be known as “Turner Tuesday,” at least in the Turner home of Warren, Ohio.

Michael and Megan Turner had walk-off game-winning hits at approximately the same time.
Michael and Megan Turner had walk-off game-winning hits at approximately the same time.

On that afternoon, freshman starting shortstop Megan Turner of Champion High in Champion Township, Ohio, came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh of a home softball game with two outs, bases loaded, in a 2-2 tie with Girard High.

Dramatically, she smashed a waist-high pitch over the left-center field wall to give the Lady Flashes the 6-2 win in exciting walk-off fashion.

At roughly the same time, her older brother, Michael, a sophomore on Champion’s baseball team, stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the seventh with two outs in a 1-1 tie against the same high school, Girard High, and ripped a walk-off game-winning double to give the Flashes a 2-1 road victory.

Two Turner batters, two walk-off wins, two games that will forever be legendary in the Ohio family story telling.

“I thought that was so cool to think that my brother and I hit the game winning hits at the same time with the same circumstances,” Megan said this week. “ I’ve never heard of that happening before.”

“Hitting the game-winning grand slam was just an amazing feeling to have,” Megan continues, “especially with all of my teammates there to celebrate with me. When I hit the grand slam, it felt like the greatest feeling in the world at that time. It felt awesome to win the game like that, especially losing to that same team the day before.”

According to the athletes’ mother, Christy, Michael’s reaction was more succinct when he found out about his sister’s accomplishment.

“He said, ‘No Way!  That’s awesome, are you kidding me?”

Megan, who has a 4.0 GPA, is a talented club player with college-level talent. The freshman plays for the Michigan Pride 00 team coached by Dan Bressler and attended the OnDeck Bandifest held in January in Chicago where her OnDeck Measurements put her in the 93 percentile of all athletes ever tested.

The infielder/pitcher – included in the 2018 Hot 100 “Next In: 101-200” rankings – was subsequently invited to work out at a Michigan State hitting camp and also has received recruiting interest since then from several other colleges including Arizona State.

Her brother is also pretty good on the field: a two-year starting varsity shortstop, in his first 11 games this year Michael hit .500, going 19-for-38 with seven doubles and 16 RBI.

But whatever the future holds for the two stick-and-ball siblings, they will always have that remarkable day in April of 2015 when both as batters ended a game on the last pitch and unknowingly became heroes within minutes of each other.

The day down the road when they’ll tell their children and grandchildren about their marvelous athletic exploits which they’ll forever refer to as “Turner Tuesday.”
