Team Profile: East Cobb Bullets – Pointer 14U (4/21)

We continue our tour of the South where there’s a lot of talent by looking at a younger team in Georgia that’s relatively new, but is starting to make some waves one and off the field as one of 17 teams in their well-known organization, the East Cobb Bullets…

FullCountSoftball.com: What is your background before taking over for the 14U team?
Amy Pointer: I played at the University of West Georgia and have coached for over 15 years including more than seven years as the head coach at Bremen High. Our high school teams have made the Georgia Elite 8 playoffs and at the club level we’ve played in ASA Nationals. We’ve been fortunate to have players in the high school and club programs continue on to play college ball.

FCS.com: Where do your players on the Bullets come from, are they all local or do some travel a ways to play for you?
AP: Our athletes come to us from all over, some more than 60 miles from our home practice field.

FCS.com: What was the purpose of creating the team… to showcase players, win titles, develop skills…?
AP: We wanted to bring together the best players in the state who have the passion and desire to succeed at the highest levels, in other words develop and play college softball.

Fairly new to the club scene, the Bullets - Pointer squad has beaten some 16U teams and celebrates a grand slam here.

FCS.com: What have been some of your top achievements in terms of winning or placing at club events?
AP: We played “up” in the fall of 2014 at the Veteran’s Showcase 16U level and went 3-2. Playing in the Scenic City “Super Pool” we went 3-1 with our only loss being to Georgia Force-Haag, 4-2. They are in the FAB 50 top 50 teams. Several of our players have played in Nationals and Hall of Fame tournaments.

FCS.com: Has there been a key moment or defining experience in the team’s history?
AP: We beat our sister team, the Bullets – Biele 14U team –which is ranked No. 9 in the Full Count FAB 50 14U ratings – in the ASA State Tournament last year and Coach (Andrew) Biele wants a rematch just because we know each other (laughs). He doesn’t like to lose, but we beat them and talk all the time.

FCS.com: What is your primary focus or goal with this team?
AP: To get to a National tournament and improve our ability to succeed at the next level.

FCS.com: What do you think are the strengths of the team?
AP: Our offense has big hitters, we’re solid on defense and we have good control pitchers.

The Bullets had a great time working with youth from the City of Refuge Ministry including teaching them softball skills.

FCS.com: Is there one or more things you’d say that separates you from other club teams?
AP: I would say it’s that our organization produces college-ready players because we have solid fundamentals and have the ability to put the ball in play at the plate.

FCS.com: Finally, what do you like about the make-up of this team?
AP: I like how our players work on and off the field and help in the community. This team volunteered at Christmas delivering presents and food with the local church and also recently conducted a Girls Camp for under-privileged girls ages 5 to 13 with the City of Atlanta Refuge Ministry. The young girls had never played the game and our team spent about three hours with them sharing a Sunday afternoon and experiencing life events. The Ministry sent a thank you email from all of their girls to our Bullets team for something those girls have never experienced, had never done before and will never forget. Our players asked when we can do it again.
