NATIONAL RANKINGS

It may be settling down to a battle between Mission Viejo of California and Alexander Central of North Carolina at the top of the FullCountSoftball.com FAB 50 rankings for the rest of the season.

In this week’s rankings, due to previous No. 2 American Heritage and previous No. 3 Hagerty both taking losses in Florida, Alexander Central has been brought up from No. 4 to No. 2.

Kiana Millsaps of Alexander Central (N.C.) has a 0.09 ERA.

Sure, the level of competition in North Carolina is questionable compared to Southern California where Mission Viejo reigns, but it’s also getting too difficult to discount what head coach Monte Sherrill and his girls have accomplished.

Heading into this week, Alexander Central was on an 81-game winning streak with three straight state titles. Pitcher Kiana Millsaps also was sporting a 0.09 ERA in 74 innings thrown.

Mission Viejo, meanwhile, has already won three major tournaments, adding last weekend’s Michelle Carew Classic title to previous crowns won at the Dave Kops Tournament of Champions in Arizona and the Best of the West tourney hosted by FAB 50 ranked Pacifica.

Last season, remember, Mission Viejo was given benefit of the doubt even with one loss as the No. 1 team in the FAB 50 since that loss was to a team the Diablos also beat twice. They are in the same boat this season, meaning one loss at this point is not going to derail them from another FAB 50 title as long as they end up winning in their division of the CIF Southern Section playoffs. Their strength of schedule advantage over even a potentially unbeaten Alexander Central is just too much.

Alexander Central’s move to No. 2 wasn’t the only highlight of this week’s rankings. A whopping total of 17 teams had to drop out mainly because top teams in California, Florida, Texas and Arizona took turns beating each other. In some cases, other teams from those states moved up the most, including new No. 21 Patrick Henry of San Diego, Calif.
