One of the top high school tournaments in the nation – the Kissimmee Klassic — will take place March 26-28 in Kissimmee, Fla. and will feature many of the top teams and players in the Sunshine State.
The 23rd annual tournament once again will be hosted by the Osceola Kowboys and Coach George Coffey’s Kowboy softball program.
The Kissimmee Klassic has become the premier prep tournament in the SouthEast every year and where teams want to go to prepare for the state tournament trail. No better endorsement could exist than the student/athletes that have gone on to college to further their softball careers.
Last weekend the country got to see two of the Kissimmee Klassic’s premier alumni as the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked college teams in the country locked heads in Gainesville. Leading the LSU Tigers was 2012 former Tampa Chamberlain star SS Bianka Bell [hit .667 at 2012 Klassic] while the Gators had former Harmony star and Klassic alumni Lele Ocasio on the mound starting two of the very important three game series.
The Gators also field Klassic alumni Taylor Swartz [2012 Palm Beach Gardens] and freshman Kayli Kvistad who led the 2014 Klassic in home runs for Columbia High.
This year’s addition will feature 59 seniors that have already signed college scholarships. That also means over a hundred underclassmen are looking to find someplace to play after their high school career is over.
The team talent is great two and it usually translates into championships.
For example, 12 teams from the 2014 Klassic made the Florida Final Four last year with three of the top seven classes crowning a Klassic team as State Champion along with three runners-up.

Here’s a look at the teams competing in this year’s tournament and players to watch…
BLUE DIVISION PREVIEW (records are from 2014)
A team that has spent several years preparing to be one of the premier teams in Florida by playing as many ‘big’ schools as would schedule them has made it to the top as the No. 1 seed for 2015.
With three state championships in the last four years, the Canterbury Crusaders [21-6] are a 2A team with big time D1 players. With the best battery in the state they have both of them for the next two years as they are both sophomores before they head off to big time D1 programs [soph C Danielle Romanello verbal to Florida, soph P Kama Woodall verbal to NC State].
Add soph SS Taylor Bump [verballed to Michigan and sr P Hailey Hopkins [signed to Kent State] and not only is the talent there but former Rollins star Jody Moore leads them and got there by challenging all teams at tournaments like the Kissimmee Klassic.
With six seniors signed to college scholarships, Tate High led by Coach Melinda Wyatt is a virtual dead heat for the No. 1 seed with Canterbury. They were 24-5 last year and return one of the state’s top pitchers in sr P Tori Perkins [20-3, UAB].
The No. 3 seed is no stranger to the top echelon of Florida softball. St. Thomas Aquinas [30-2] is the 2 time defending state 7A champions. They graduated the best battery in the state last year but the cupboards are far from bare. Sr SS Jill Healy [Rhodes College] leads maybe the best program in the state.
Corel Reef [22-9] was the 2013 8A state champion and the No. 1 ranked team in the state this year in 8A and our #4 seed. College signed seniors Denver Kelly, Carsyn Gordan and Kylon Becker have been playing together very successfully for a long time. Additional signed seniors Christina Colli and Cassandra Garcia make 5 college bound Barracudas.
The No. 4 seed is making it’ first trip to Kissimmee to compete with the best teams in all classes. 6A powerhouse Forest [Ocala] [26-3] will showcase maybe the best jr P in the state in Morgan White [22-3 last yr] and they think maybe they have the best battery in the state as White tosses it to USC Upstate bound sr C Caley Chappel [.482].
Perennial powerhouse Gulliver Prep [23-6] had their four-year run of state championships broken last year but Coach Mark Shusterman still wants to win a Kissimmee Klassic championship and will count on sr Tori Rios [Lynn University] to lead them.
The No. 7 and No. 8 seeds University [Orange City] [23-4] & Hagerty [Oviedo] [28-5] are in the same district and have split their two encounters already this year. No district anywhere can match having two of the states very best pitchers in the same district as does University’s sr P Penny Nichols [Univ. of Mississippi] and Hagerty’s sr P Samantha Worrell [So Florida].
University Coach Kenny Walters is sending off five seniors to college with four of them D1 programs. 4A powerhouse Bradford [ranked No. 3] [18-8] and defending state champion 6A Pines Charter [22-6] round out the top 10 in the Blue Bracket.
Bradford has four signed seniors and Pines Charter Coach Tom Fadul has taken his troops to the state championship game the last three years winning two of them. Pines Charter will showcase jr P Claire Bount [18-6, .58 ERA] & soph OF Grassy Gomez [.405].
Others to Watch:
Palmetto Miami [17-8] challenges Florida Christian [17-8] and Chaminade Madonna [18-5] for the top seed in the Gold Bracket.
Palmetto returns seven starters and their top P Amanda Guglietta [10-5, 3.16 ERA]. Chaminade–Madonna is off to a very hot start in 2015 behind seven returning starters and a very young crew led by sr OF Jackie Yao. The Florida Christian Patriots are always tough to beat and bring back both of their pitchers from last year [sr P Karli Smith 9-3, jr P Faith Vazquez 8-5].

Others to Watch:
- Local favorite St Cloud Bulldogs [18-10] will showcase big time bats in jr OF Sara Crawford and soph SS Cortney Wentzell while challenging top level competition all season long.
- East coast power Cocoa Beach [24-6] will let you see sr P Megan Kugelmann [20-5, Florida International].
- North Ft Myers coming off of a 22-6 campaign hopes to ride the arm of soph P MacKenzie Peterson [15-5, 1.50 ERA] along with eight returning starters to their best season ever.
- This year’s distance award goes to West High [26-8] out of Normal, Ill. [home of Illinois State] which will leave the snow in the Midwest to enjoy some Florida sunshine and softball competition. They were 31-4 two years ago and 26-8 last year in a rebuilding year. With 3 verbally committed juniors to colleges leading eight returning starters they can compete and still take home some sunburn! Expect jr P Reganne Camp [14-6, 2.08 ERA] to carry the load for the Wildcats.
- Harmony [28-3] has had a tremendous four year run and are sending off sr CF Lilly Mann to U of Florida to follow Lele Ocasio who has already become a national impact player at the Univ. of Florida.
- East River had an awesome campaign last year going 20-4 and returns eight starters led by sr P Stephanie Bryden [12-3, UNC-Greensboro] in hopes of pulling off the upset on live TV against the top seeded Canterbury Crusaders.
- Lake Howell was a regional finalist last year finishing 18-11 & have one of central Florida’s top hurlers in jr P Giovanna Watts [14-10].
- The host Kowboys are always a threat behind Hall of Fame coach George Coffey and are very proud of their two D1 players. Sr middle infielder Kali Jones was 1st team All State as a sophomore [signed to UNC Wilmington] and led the state 7A stats in runs scored that year and was leading the state 7A hitters in average midway through this year. Jr middle infielder Haisette Escudero will be a big help to some D1 program with her speed, bat and glove.
- Riverview [15-11] mentor Angela Slater always has her troops playing their best when they come to Kissimmee and were state champs in 2000.
- Riverdale Ft Myers [15-13] brings its top eight hitters back and hopes to duplicate their Gold Bracket championship like they did in 2009. They are led by jr P Meghan Reno and sr C Hannah Anderson.
- Okeechobee [15-9] brings jr P Jordan Lawlis [11-3, 1.39 ERA] and high hopes in a return to Kissimmee for the Brahmans.
- Barron Collier [22-5] has been one of the premier programs in the state for 25 years [witness their four state championships in the ‘90’s]. They are led by Florida Gulf Coast bound sr Morgan Sutherland and were 22-5 last year.
- Doral Academy was 20-7 last year, returns seven starters and signed four to college scholarships with sr P Jennifer Acevedo the leader.
- Dr. Phillips brought successful former Southern Florida coach Kerry Kelly to Central Florida and she is building the Panthers into a force to be reckoned with. Leading them will be sr P Caitlyn Jones who had 17-10 success last year.
- Oakleaf Orange Park makes it’s first trip to Kissimmee with four college signed seniors, soph P Kelsey Sweatt [13-8, 1.05 ERA] and a 17-12 year in 2014.
- Lake Nona had a very good 17-9 campaign last year and returns seven starters. Jensen Beach [13-14] coach Lori Miller has seen as many Klassic games as anybody and is a wealth of knowledge. She has a college-bound hurler [Christiana Marasa, St John’s River] and nin returning starters so anything can happen.
- Plant [14-12] coach Melissa Sigman plays in the tough 8A District 7 and gets her kids ready for the state trail by challenging them in Kissimmee. They will be led by sr OF Danielle Scott and a host of underclassmen. She will be young but does have six starters returning.
- Coach Mark Huaman has had some glory years at Winter Springs [12-13] and is always preparing his kids with life lessons. He brings to Kissimmee soph P Payron Laffrey [10-10, 2.06 ERA] and a young crew preparing to get better.
