As I prepare for the start of high school softball, I have set goals for not only myself, but goals with my team.

Last year during high school ball it was a big transition for me. The level of differentiation between high school ball and travel ball was difficult to get used to.

For example, umpires had a bigger strike zone which included strikes that I would not necessarily go for. And I didn’t have the year I wanted to. I felt my power numbers and average could have been higher.

Kyra says her main goal is to have a better plan at the plate and to improve her batting stats.

This year my main goal is to have a better game plan and attack at the plate and improve my numbers.

Defensively, since I will be playing shortstop, I hope to work on foot speed and mechanics. Shortstop will allow me to work on not only range, but also receive reps in different field positions.

If I can improve in these two areas I will not only help myself become a better player but most importantly help my team with run production.

As a team, this year is a big rebuilding year for us. Last year we graduated eight

seniors and had the best record in our school history for softball. However, there is still a lot more we can accomplish.

The girls remaining, including myself, hope to improve in a few categories each year. If we can improve in a category then the year has been successful.

This year the team is aiming to improve in our record and batting average as a team. Our ultimate goal is to be a team that can win a state championship and we are putting in the time and effort to eventually get there.

High school ball is a time to just enjoy being around school friends, have fun playing the game, and get tons of practice.

Travel ball is more of a serious setting; however, high school ball lessens the seriousness and just allows me to gain practice before travel ball kicks off.

I am excited for the start of the high school season not only to try to improve on what I accomplished last year, but to have fun with my friends and have a great season!

Sometimes it is not only about winning, but developing good character.

Good luck to everyone starting high school ball!
