FullCountSoftball.com: You started playing baseball before softball, correct?
Katlyn Pavlick: Yes, I started my career playing baseball in the boy’s league when I was five years old. I started playing fast pitch when I was seven.

FCS.com: For most of your career you’ve played up, sometimes several years older… why was that?
KP: The game seemed to come easier to me than some of the others players my age. By the time I was 12, I was playing against older girls on a regular basis. I played in my first 18U showcase that summer. I have played in a variety of big showcases against many Division I players and, currently, my 14U team has two other Division I players with more to come. It has always been a goal of mine to play at the highest levels possible because I believe the great competition will help me with becoming the best player that I can be.

FCS.com: You’re known to be a fantastic hitter, both for average and power… tell us about your success at the plate…
KP: My middle school and travel ball seasons were a huge success for me. In middle school I batted .666 and had six home runs. Ever since I was young, I’ve batted 3rd or 4th in the lineup. For travel season, I had an average of .485 with 28 doubles, five triples, and 18 home runs.

The ball explodes off the bat for the Pennsylvania freshman who has won a home run derby.
The Pennsylvania freshman has won a home run derby as well as a free throw shooting contest!

FCS.com: College-wise, you won’t have far to go!
KP: Yes, that’s correct: I am committed to The University of Pittsburgh. I had also visited Robert Morris University and Saint Francis University. I received offers from both of those Division I schools as well, but I can’t wait to play in the ACC!

FCS.com: What would you say have been some of the highlights of your softball career so far, even though you’re just a freshman?
KP: I won the Home Run Derby at the World Series in 2010 when our team was ranked No. 1 in the nation at the 10U division. In the 2014 USSSA World Series, I received the overall Offensive MVP and my team also took first place, going 9-0. At school, I won both the 7th and 8th grade award for the most physically fit. Also, I took 1st place in the 2010 Western Pa. Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest and advanced to compete at Penn State in the finals!

FCS.com: So you’re a skilled basketball shooter too! Do you play other sports? What else do you like to do off the field?
KP: Along with softball, I also participate in other sports such as volleyball and track. I am a member of the Interact Club for my school and community.

FCS.com: Sometimes when players commit, there’s a tendency to ease up a little since you got the offer. What are your thoughts on that?
KP: I worked hard to be the player I am today, but I plan to work even harder so I can perform at the best of my ability. I go to hitting lessons and strength and conditioning every week.

FCS.com: It sounds like you’re pretty driven to succeed. What motivates you to be the best player possible?
KP: When I was younger, it was always a dream of mine to play Division I softball in college. Many people doubted that players from the Northeast were good enough to play major college softball, they said that only players from the West Coast and South were capable of playing at that level. This inspired me to prove them wrong. I take pride in my accomplishments and it’s even more amazing that I will get to do it in my own hometown at Pitt in front of the same people that questioned the talent here.

Here’s a recruiting video of Katlyn shot last fall… some pretty impressive at-bats!
