Today’s spotlight takes us to Tennessee where we meet one of the top catchers in the freshman class who plays for a Kentucky club team and has major colleges all over the nation knocking on her door!

Tenn.

Scouting Report:

Extremely strong arm, pop time timed yesterday at Alabama’s catching clinic was 1.53, at Kentucky was timed at 1.50; athletic and moves well, has a good frame, intelligent behind the plate, good at knowing situations… knows when to throw and not to throw. Last summer she picked off 16 base runner. Occasionally calls pitches in games. Coming into her own as a power hitter (has hit 250 foot home runs, most HRs are line drives) and good average hitter, between .400 and .500, smart hitter gap-to-gap, average speed and was timed at 2.9 at camps.

Other Activities:

Also plays basketball, starts on varsity as freshman averaging 11 points, six rebounds and two steals.

Interesting Facts:

  • has played travel ball since she was 9.
  • USFA World Series Championship when she was 10 years old.
  • she nicknamed herself “G-dog” when she was 6 years old; her grandfather calls her “Possum.”
  • she played baseball (shortstop and pitcher) when she was 11 years on the same team as her brother.
  • she played in her local basketball championship (and won) with a broken bone in her foot.

Coach’s Comments:

“Gracie Osbron is the best player all-around player I have ever coached in any sport. Her physical abilities are unmatched and she has a personality and competitiveness to match.”

Gracie has recorded 1.5-range POP times according to her coaches.
Gracie has recorded 1.5-range POP times according to her coaches.

“At 14 years of age, we have measured her overhand throwing speed in excess of 72 mph, bat speed in the mid 70’s and home-to-first in 2.9 seconds. Her primary position on our team is catcher where she has posted pop times in an unbelievable 1.5 seconds. While her mechanics are good, there is still room for improvement so I believe she can post even lower numbers. She is a true all around athlete able to play any position on the field and play it well, with the exception of pitcher.

“While Gracie’s physical skills are rare, her attitude and competitiveness put her at the top of the elite category. Simply stated, she hates to lose. Team success is more important than individual success to her. If we need a sacrifice bunt to help our team win, she is eager to do it, even as our HR leader.

“While her skills make her a leader on the field, she is also a vocal leader in the dugout and team huddles. She has an understanding of the game that far surpasses her age. If she makes a mistake, she will be the first to say, “I screwed up coach, sorry about that.” Unlike some other talented players I have coached, Gracie is not afraid to own her mistakes and is very coachable. She is never satisfied and wants to be better. Gracie’s attitude has been if we won by 10 runs, we should have won by 15 runs.”

“If a coach could design a softball player from scratch, incorporating physical ability, mental toughness, attitude, work ethic, leadership and competitiveness, that player would, no doubt, look like Gracie Osbron.”
