“Cinderella Story” goes ACC (1/11)

One thing I like to do when I go to events is say hello to club coaches as I walk around fields and ask if there are any good stories or emerging players on their teams.

That’s what I did in October at a Surf City tournament in Huntington Beach, Calif. when I ran into Marty Tyson, the head of the Corona Angels organization which is one of the top club programs in the country at any age.

Coach Tyson said he had both a good story and an emerging player in Skye Webb, a 2017 lefty slapper from Temecula Valley, Calif. who runs well and is so athletic – she’s also an outstanding volleyball player— that major softball programs such as Arizona and Tennessee were instantly recruiting her.

It didn’t hurt that Marty, with his stellar skills at developing and placing players, was raving about her.

What was most intriguing about Skye, however, was that she was a relative novice to softball. As I wrote in the fall when I first profiled her, “she sort of stumbled into softball when she was at a batting cage with her little brother who plays baseball and a coach said she looked like an athlete and should take some swings.”

“The coach was impressed, told Skye she should play rec ball, she joined and skyrocketed up from there.”

... and how she looks now celebrating her commitment to Georgia Tech!

So it was exciting news, but not entirely unexpected, when I got a note from Skye on Saturday saying, “I’m writing to let you know the I recently made a verbal commitment to the prestigious Georgia Tech university after carefully considering seven offers from schools in the SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Mountain West and Big Sky Conferences.”

“The reasons I chose Georgia Tech are its wonderful academic reputation, great coaching staff and great location.”

“I plan on majoring in Bio-Medical Engineering when I get there. As you know, I have been playing softball less than two years and, as you correctly stated, this has truly been a Cinderella story.”

“I owe my success to God, my parents, Coach Marty Tyson and Coach Dena Tyson-Slye. Thanks… Skye Webb.”

Congratulations to the talented sophomore whose ceiling is definitely… (must. say. it)… Skye high!
