Brooke’s blog: two-sport fun in the fall (11/6)

Brooke Vestal, the 2018 pitcher with the Texas Bombers and a very early commit to Oklahoma, has had a busy, but very fun, fall so far.

In her latest blog, Brooke writes about how she has tasted success on the volleyball court with her high school team and how she’s got to face elite competition at events like the OU Sooner camp and last weekend’s Ronald McDonald tournament in Houston.

The Texas freshman became a national prospect after the 2013 PGF Nationals, where, at only age 13, had SEC, Big 12, Big Ten and Pac-12 coaches watching her pitch.

After a strong 2014 run, including helping the Bombers 16U team to at 3rd place finish at the Colorado Sparkler Super 64 where whe went 6-0 with 60 K’s in 34 2/3 innings, Brooke is now considered one of the top pitchers in the club world and one of the best overall prospects in the 2018 class.

I am checking in after a great weekend at the Ronald McDonald showcase in Houston last week.

The weather was perfect and the competition was stout with 18U teams from around the country competing at a high level. This tournament is a highlight of our fall schedule and it is fun to see so many talented players doing their thing!

One of the impressive things done by the Bombers is wearing jerseys in behalf of fallen soldiers and presenting the families with the jersey of their fallen loved one.

Another big moment was our jersey presentation to a 4 The Fallen family.  Every Texas Bomber has a jersey with the name of a soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We wear these for special games and it was awesome to present one of these jerseys to the family of Billy Miller.

It is always fun to meet and compete against the strong players and teams from around the country.  During tournament play and a September camp in Norman, Okla., I’ve gotten to know some of my future teammates. I look forward to following these girls as we work our way to the next level.

For me this past weekend was a two-sport winner. Friday night my Canyon High School Volleyball team came out on top in a playoff game against our cross-town rivals. Saturday morning at 7:30, I was 200 miles away in the circle starting my first big game for Scott Smith and our 18U Texas Bomber Gold team. I got through that one against a strong team with an intimidating lineup.

As the fall season wraps up, I am already looking forward to next year’s tournament run. Nothing matches that two-month summer stretch where the best teams get together and play ball for the big titles.

For those of us that live this life, those battles are what we work for!

Viva Texas where we can hit the beach in November for some North Alamo bonding before “winter” rolls in and pushes us into the deer stand.
