Event Preview: West Coast Nat’l Elite Camp (10/15)

The most prestigious of the one-day showcases begins tomorrow as the West Coast National Elite Camp kicks off at Mat. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. with 78 elite underclass players ready to work out and play in front of dozens of college coaches from around the country.

Run by OnDeck Softball, the West Coast camp will be followed by the East Coast National Elite Camp on November 6-7 at Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville, Ga.

Tomorrow’s event features players from as far away as New Jersey and covers five graduating classes: 2016’s all the way to two players from the 2010 class.

“We think this is a great crop of talent,” says Derek Allister, who along with his wife Joann, runs OnDeck Softball and travels the country running camps and jamborees to showcase elite talent.

“We’re very excited about the players coming in, it’s a very young group although we also have some older kids who have slipped through the cracks and show well.”

A strong performance at the West Coast Elite Camp can literally put a player on the recruiting map!

Allister says he’s excited about the variety and balance of the talent across all age groups.

“It’s solid down to the two 2020s,” he continues. “The two seventh graders are fabulous players and overall the talent is deep and athletic. There will be a couple of surprise players as well; for example, Courtney Pestka from Idaho went to our Northern California event and made plays that were ESPN highlight players.”

Allister says it’s a busy time of the year and it’s typical that a handful of invited players – on average from eight to 10 – won’t be able to attend.

“What happens is some kids who are going on (unofficial campus) trips and can’t make it while some are playing volleyball and they can’t make it. Some get squeezed and end up verballing right before the event, but we get an incredible participating rate compared to the number of invitations, especially this year.”

Number wise, the event producer says the target number is 70 for the camp, but it’s almost always higher than that.

“We have a total of 78 right now, we could put 200 players in but it always drifts up to around 75 as kids come in late.”

One other highlight of this week’s camp is two legendary former Pac 10 players, Nancy Evans (Univ. of Arizona) and Dana Sorensen (Stanford) will be pitching in the drills to the camp participants.

Here’s a list of the players scheduled to attend the West Coast National Elite Camp on October 16-17, 2014 (sorted by grad year and then last name):
