A lot going on right now with key events happening all over the nation. Here’s a look back at a big tournament last weekend, the start of high school playoffs in one state and two important club events happening this weekend.

Showcase at Big League Dreams (0ct 3-5 2014)Let’s start with the tournament that took place last weekend in West Covina and Chino Hills, Calif. Here’s a list of each “pool” and who had the best records:

Two standout players of note:

— Outfielder Cayla Kessinger of the So Cal Choppers went 5-for-10 with a two-run home run, a three-run homer and walkoff grand slam to account for 11 RBI. She’s committed to Missouri.

— Pitcher Brittany Finney of Explosion gave up only four hits all weekend and no earned runs while limited the powerful Firecrackers-Rico team to two hits on Sunday. The Oklahoma commit also pitched a shutout Sunday versus the Washington Ladyhawks.

The Oklahoma High School Fastpitch State Tournament starts today for Small Classes 3A-B.

There are two big club events this weekend to note:

17th Annual Team New Jersey Fall College Showcase (18U & 16U)

Friday, October 10-12 at Edison and Bridgewater NJ

Note: there are teams from 16 states and Canada with programs coming from as far away as California and Washington.

This is always a well-run tournament and Jim Barsalona makes it great for teams and coaches.

Surf City Fall Showcase (18U, 16U)

Out West, this week’s event run by Surf City Tournaments features many of the top teams in California, Arizona and Washington.

Perennial top powers like the OC Batbusters, So Cal A’s, Corona Angels, So Cal Choppers, Explosion and from NorCal the Grapettes and All American Sports Academy plus many more elite teams will participate.

Play will start play Friday night at 5 pm and wrap up Sunday. This is the first of three weekends featuring Surf City tournaments—the next two are the October Showcase and the Halloween Showcase.
