The ASA/USA Class ‘A’ Championships were held at each age level over the weekend and the Tampa Mustangs-Boynton team took the 18 ‘A’ title at the championship held in Montgomery, Ala.

The Mustangs wrapped up an outstanding 2014 season with a 91-12 record and rolled off 10 straight victories to dominate the 109-team field culminating with a 2-1 win over the local favorites, the Birmingham Vipers.

The Mustangs went 91-12 on the year and 10-0 in the tournament to win the championship.

The victory on Sunday gave the Mustang organization its second 18U ASA National Championship.

The Florida team was led all week by the power pitching of Megan Kugalmann (2015, uncommitted) and Jill McElderry (2014, uncommitted) who combined for eight victories, a combined ERA of 0.82 and an opponents’ batting average of .148.

Offensively, the Mustangs hit .340 as a team and were led by third baseman Lindsay Boynton (2015, Mercer) who hit .478 with a slugging percentage of .826. She also hit two home runs and put up 12 RBI during the week.

Kugelmann also shined at the plate as well as in the circle as she hit .571 and had a .786 slugging percentage while hitting the game-winning home run in the championship game.

Outfielder Shannon Bell (2014, Hillsborough Signed) also hit well collecting a .407 average and totaled 12 bases.

“Up and down the line up the contributions were endless,” said Head Coach Jamie Boynton. “The team executed flawlessly both with timely hitting and power combined with small ball.”

During the event the Mustangs scored 54 runs and allowed only 16 enroute to the championship.

Coach Boynton says chemistry and cohesiveness was one thing that made this group a special championship squad.

“This Mustang team is represented by 10 Bay Area high schools and has played together for two years,” he said.

The Tampa Mustangs are Florida’s oldest non-profit travel fastpitch softball organization (established in 1981) and has 12 teams ranging in age from 10U to 18U.
