Wednesday afternoon in Huntington Beach at the PGF 16U Nationals saw the winner’s bracket teams narrowed down to eight. There were some down-to-the-wire games and some lopsided wins, but the talent in every game was outstanding.

Here’s a look at the eight games all played starting at 2:30 pm PST; the quarterfinals will be played at 5 pm PST.

BRACKET A:

 

Birmingham Thunderbolts 2, So Cal Choppers-Shipman/Ziese 1
One of the best games of the week so far saw the Choppers get the first run on the board in the second and take the lead into the bottom of the seventh until shortstop Carmyn Greenwood hit a two-out, walk-off double that knocked in the tying and winning runs. Pitcher Ashlee Swinson (2016, Auburn) allowed four hits and over seven innings for the win.

Beverly Bandits 2, Jersey Intensity-Hannigan 0
Pitcher Alexis Holloway (2017, Notre Dame) is emerging as one of the stars of the week as she no-hit the Intensity in a complete seven-inning masterpiece. She gave up just one hit and struck out six and was the offensive star as well going 2-for-3 with a triple and RBI.

 

Corona Angels 8, Bandits-Demarini 1
The Angels put the game out of reach in the first winning when they scored five runs including three on a blast by infielder Frankie Tago. Pitcher Sam Manti (2016, Washington) pitched a smooth five innings and allowed only three hits and two walks while striking out five.

 

Carolina Elite 8, Reno Heat 0
The Elite jumped out to four runs in the first three innings started off by a home run by Jasmine Parker (2015, Florida State) as part of her 2-for-4, two RBI day. Katie Chappell (2015, College of Charleston) went the full six innings and allowed only two hits to get the win.

 

BRACKET B

 

Atlanta Vipers-Kates 2, Firecrackers-Brashear 1
Another exciting game that went down to the final inning as the Vipers scored in the top of the seventh to get the win. Kali Turner (2015, uncommitted) hit a two-out single to plate Bailey Sims (2016, uncommitted) for the eventual winning run and Kalia Johnson (2016, Kentucky) gave up just three hits and one run while striking out seven in the victory.

 

So Cal A’s-Myers/McNee 6, Explosion 3
The game was tied 3-3 until the A’s scored on a Sarai Niu (2015, uncommitted) home run in the fifth and then added two more in the sixth as catcher Amber Nelson (2015, Colorado State) doubled, infielder Chloe Melanson (2015, Miami-Ohio) singled and outfielder Kora Wade (2015, Boise State) drove them in with a double.

 

EC Bullets-Bass 5, Irvine Sting 4
The visitors from Georgia, the Bullets, jumped out to a 5-0 lead but the Sting fought back and scored three in the top of the fifth but couldn’t pull even as the Bullets move to the next round. Mary Avant (2016, Georgia) got the win allowing only one hit and no runs in 2 1/3 inning. Shortstop Morgan Moczygemba went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

 

Ohio Outlaws 4, Georgia Elite 3
The Elite jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth but the Outlaws put up two runs in the bottom of the inning and two more in the sixth to secure the win. Pitcher McKenna Coffman (2016, Eastern Illinois) pitched four innings and got the win. She also helped her cause by going 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI.
