Over 200 of the best 16U and 14U teams in the nation have come to Huntington Beach, Calif.—or “Surf City USA” as the locals call it—to participate in what has become the most prestigious Nationals in club softball.

While yesterday was primarily a travel day, Sunday was a mixture of everything, from quality play on the field to team’s checking in and getting ready for their first games of the week.

The atmosphere at the Huntington Beach Sports Complex was festive as vendors had their booths up, players were doing velocity throw testing at the NCSA booth and getting tested for bat speed in the Mizuno tent.

Club and college coaches reconnected while parents and players got a lay of the land.

I saw elite teams like the Gold Coast Hurricanes-Acuri squad arrive and witnessed great play on the field too, including Cal-bound 2015 pitcher Brynne Fitzpatrick striking out one Atlanta Viper-Kates player on a high fastball before giving up a double to sweet-swinging lefty Kalie Johnson (2016, Kentucky).

The weekend games were more loose with a lot of free substitution, but Monday it gets real as bracket play begins and runs through Thursday before Friday’s championship games at Bill Barber Park in Irvine.
