USA Softball selection camp finishes games (6/20)

In their final matchup up of the 2014 USA Softball Women’s National Team Selection Camp, the U.S. squad swept their exhibition doubleheader against the Virginia All-Stars.

In game one, the Red, White and Blue combined for 15 hits for a 12-0 shutout win, while nine hits pushed the U.S. to a 4-1 win in game two.  Sam Fischer (Simi Valley, Calif.) had a standout performance for the night, going 5-for-6 with two home runs and six RBI.

“For the last 12 days we’ve had incredible effort from these 22 athletes,” said Head Coach Ken Eriksen.  “You could take anyone from this camp and create a great team and the chemistry of this team was amazing.  The 22 here today make it very difficult to choose the final 17 but going forward into the summer we feel good about this solid group of women.”

Nine runs in the opening three innings allowed Team USA to gain a comfortable lead early in the game. A two-run triple by Lauren Gibson (Pasadena, Md.) and an RBI double by Fischer during the first inning put the U.S. up 3-0 after just one inning.  Gibson would gain another RBI via a single in the second inning to score Michelle Moultrie (Jacksonville, Fla.), who had reached on a double to right field.

Team USA added five more runs in the bottom of the third as Kellie Fox (San Diego, Calif.) led off the inning with a single.  Back-to-back singles by Destinee Martinez (Corona, Calif.) and Haylie McCleney (Morris, Ala.) loaded the bases for Moultrie, who doubled to centerfield to plate two runs. That was followed up by a Raven Chavanne (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) single, scoring McCleney, Martinez and Moultrie.  The U.S. would add their final run of the inning after Amanda Chidester (Allen Park, Mich.) reached base on a fielder’s choice, which plated Taylor Hoagland (Flower Mound, Texas), who pinch ran for Chavanne.
