Alexander Central completes perfect season (6/7)

What a week in the Sherrill home.
On Thursday, junior infielder Vada Sherrill of Alexander Central High of Taylorsville, N.C. was given the news that she was the North Carolina Gatorade State Player of the Year and on Saturday her big sister Bailey was named the 4A playoff MVP after she helped lead the Cougars to a two-game sweep over Cape Fear in the 4A softball playoffs.

The victory means the Central will likely finish No. 1 in the USA Today final national rankings and clinche a No. 3 final spot in the StudentSportsSoftball.com FAB 50.
The older sibling had two hits and drove in three runs in the deciding game Saturday morning at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh as Central broke open a close game to explode for 12 runs in the final two innings to give them the 18-7 championship victory.
Friday night, the Cougars won a nail-biter 4-3 with three runs coming in the sixth inning. Bailey Sherrill had a pair of hits in that game too as she went 5-for-7 with five RBI in the series.
The pair of victories over the last 24 hours helped Alexander Central finish with a 35-0 record and put its winning streak at 66 in a row. It also means the powerhouse led by Head Coach Monte Sherrill has won four titles in the last six years.
Saturday’s win was actually closer than the final score indicated as Cape Fear led 3-2 after two innings and only trailed by one, 6-5, in the fifth inning before the Cougar bats came to life and and were led by the appropriately named Tianna Batts who compiled four hits on the day.
” I am immensely proud of our team for playing poised every game while having a bullseye on our backs,” Coach Sherrill said this afternoon. “We took everyone’s best shot this year and still stood as champions in North Carolina undefeated . I love my team and my coaches.”
