Meghan King finished up a two-year tour de force at the Florida state softball tournament Final Four in Vero Beach by leading the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders, ranked No. 7 in the Student Sports FAB 50 national ratings, to their second consecutive 7A state championship.
King, a senior left-hander who has signed with Maryland, finished her high school career with a 1-0 victory over Harmony, against whom, after allowing a leadoff single to Lily Mann, she retired 21 consecutive batters, striking out 12.

Meanwhile, senior shortstop Rachel Collins, who last year had driven in the only run in the Raiders’ championship game win over Freedom with a double in the bottom of the sixth inning, did the job again on Saturday, serving a first-inning single to right field off Harmony senior star righty Aleshia “Lele” Ocasio, driving in sophomore first baseman Brianna Stella, who led off the game with a walk and had stolen second base.
Ocasio, for her part, retired the ensuing 16 batters after Collins’ hit and finished with nine strikeouts in her six innings.
The Florida signee had come up on the short end of a nine-inning 1-0 state semifinal loss to Aquinas in 2013 as well.
King, who finished her two trips to Vero with 30 shutout innings, only 15 base runners allowed and 31 strikeouts, dominated the Longhorns with an assortment of riseballs, curves and drops.
“I would definitely say that going up against Harmony got me more jacked up than I would have been against any other opponent,” said King, who, along with Aquinas batterymate Gwen Svekis and Collins, will play for Marty Cooper’s Gold Coast Hurricanes this summer.
“Lele is one of the best softball players I have competed against,” King added, “and by knowing it was going to be such a tight game with her in the circle, it motivated me even more because I knew I had to bring my ‘A’ game.”
King finished the season 20-2 with an 0.25 ERA, logging 14 shutouts and striking out 226 in her 141 2/3 innings. Among her wins were victories over 5A champ American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.)–coached by Cooper, 8A state finalist Hagerty, 8A semifinalist Cypress Bay, 7A semifinalist Tate and 4A semifinalist Gulliver.
Her two losses were both 1-0 games, against Heritage on April 1 and then against Columbia in the final of the Kissimmee Klassic Blue bracket on April 5.
Leading the offense for the Raiders was senior Svekis, an Oregon signee, who finished the season with a .479 batting average, 12 home runs, 35 RBI and a 1.692 OPS.
Meanwhile, Collins also drove in the game’s only runs in the 2-0 regional final win in Palm Beach Gardens against Dwyer on May 2.
St. Thomas (30-2) won its fourth state title and graduates nine seniors, all of whom are signed to play softball in college.
