Recruiting News & Notes (4/18)

This week, in case you didn’t know, kicked off the start Spring Signing Period , which actually runs all the way through August 1.  While many high profile players signed in the Early Signing Period (Nov. 13-20, 2013), a lot of talented players have started to ink their Letters of Intent this week.

If you have info and/or signing photos, feel free to send along and we may publish!  E-mail: brentt@studentsports.com.

One of those is Lele Ocasio, the dominating pitcher for the Harmony (Fla.) Lady Longhorns, who signed with the Univ. of Florida on Wednesday.

Lele is 18-1 with a 0.78 ERA this spring and except for one off game against Columbia High – ranked No. 6 in our latest FAB 50 rankings – has been stellar all spring.

She has 191 strikeouts in 107.2 innings and has limited opponents to a measly .127 batting average and has Harmony high in the FAB 50 as well, currently ranked No. 13 with a 22-2 record.

Another top player who signed this week was Kayla Maxwell, a senior pitcher at Alonso High (Tampa, Fla.) who signed on Wednesday with the University of Houston.

She didn’t have much time to celebrate that achievement as Thursday she and her Ravens teammates won the Texas 8A-7 District over Bloomingdale in a 13 inning thriller that took 5 ½ hours to complete.

The 6-foot-1 right-hander plays for the New Jersey Cheetahs.

Anything can happen in the high school playoffs but it’s going to be tough for any team in Kansas to beat Bishop Carroll from Wichita because the team has not one but two outstanding pitchers who continue to roll.

Bishop Carroll is now 10-0 on the season and last night defeated the No. 3 team in the state tonight, twice with both being shutouts.

In the first game, an 8-0 win, Oklahoma State-bound Jessi Haffner was on the rubber and in the second game Oklahoma commit Brittany Finney led Carroll to a 12-0 five inning victory.

What could really be fun is seeing if the two teammates end up becoming rivals in the Sooner State and Big 12 down the road!

Brook Miko has been on fire of late.
Brook Miko has been on fire of late.

A player who’s been on fire the last few weeks is Brooke Miko, the senior shortstop from San Juan Hills (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) who plays for the Irvine Sting and is headed to Towson.

Over her last nine games, she’s gone 20-for-26 for a .769 average with nine of those hits being for extra bases: four doubles, three triples and two home runs.

She’s knocked in 16 runs and has a 1.385 slugging average and a strong 2.172 OPS.  And she’s also been 13-for-14 in steals.

Towson is getting a great playmaker for next year…

Stanford, at least to my knowledge, didn’t release their signees from the Early Signing Period and one we didn’t have is Arden Pettit, a 2014 catcher who attends The Benjamin School in Palm Beach, Fla.

She’s been a varsity softball player since the eighth grade when she hit .579 with 23 RBI to earn All-County honors.

Arden is a 5-foot-9 basketball player as well and here’s a nice piece her local CBS affiliate did on her playing her last hoops game in January.
