Justus’ blog: my daily routine (4/15)

Want to know what it takes to be an SEC-caliber softball player?
Auburn-bound Justus Perry, a 2016 infielder from Prior Lake, Minn, gives some insight into how she became that caliber of prospect in today’s blog as she writes about working out before and after school and even games.
“After practice ends around 6 pm — and games around 7 — I head home and it’s back at it,” she writes in today’s blog. “I hit it my garage with my dad for another hour and then hit the books.”
Justus is so dedicated she travels regularly with her father the 1,000 miles to and from Birmingham, Ala., to practice on the weekends with the Birmingham Thunderbolts when it’s club season.
But not it’s high school season for Perry, a 2nd team “AAA” All-State selection as a freshman last year and a key force on the Prior Lake High team which made to the state championship game in 2013.
Justus had originally committed to Arizona State, but with the coaching change and Clint Myers now at Auburn, she’s headed to the SEC and will play in the same state where her club team practices.
Also, this past summer at the PGF Nationals, we met the talented sophomore and learned about an unusual talent she has for being able to take any word and immediately repeat it backwards!
Check out this video to see Justus and her verbal talent in action!

Here in Minnesota, high school softball started two weeks ago.
Early on in the season, we have to battle cold temperatures and rain just to get our 20 allotted games in.
On a school day, I wake up at 6:20 am and the work begins. I stretch, then eat. While I put my contacts in, my dad sets up the tee and net in the garage.
I do some tee work, soft toss and my dad throws front toss to me.

Around 7:30, I get dressed and I’m off to school. That’s when the real work begins.
I take school very seriously, and love every second of it. I have some of the best teachers in the school and they really work with me and always make time for my post-game updates.
When school ends around 3 pm, on game days, we head up to the field and start warm-ups.
My team has played three games to date, including one on Monday, when the high was 36 degrees. We’ve been shaking off some rust lately, but it looks like we will have another very competitive team this year.
When it’s not game day, we head up to the field and it’s time to practice.
After practice ends around 6 pm — and games around 7 — I head home and it’s back at it. I hit it my garage with my dad for another hour and then hit the books.
I’m usually up until around 11 pm every night making sure every worksheet and every class’s work is done for the day.
After that it’s off to bed, and then up at it again for another day of excellence!
