FAB 50 Rankings – Week 4 (4/8)

It was one of the major tournament weekends of the high school softball season and in three of them the results caused some shifts in this week’s FAB 50 national rankings.

At the Michelle Carew Classic held in Anaheim, Calif., FAB 50 ranked Amador Valley trekked down from Northern California and went back home with a 12-0 record and a tourney title.

The Dons dropped their first game at the Carew Classic last year but this time defeated a field that included many of Southern California’s top teams, including preseason FAB 50 No. 2 Pacifica of Garden Grove. Amador Valley topped FAB 50 No. 10 Esperanza of Anaheim in the semifinals and in the final downed Los Alamitos 2-1. Victoria Molina came through with a two-run double in the sixth to give the Dons a 2-1 lead. Pitcher Johanna Grauer then retired the Griffins in the top of the seventh. Grauer has yet to allow an earned run this season.

Erin Anderson was the pitching and hitting star for Columbia (Fla.) in the Kissimmee Klassic.

With the tourney win, Amador Valley was able to sneak closer to Mission Viejo for the No. 1 ranking in the FAB 50. The Dons moved up from No. 3 to No. 2 and passed previous No. 2 St. Thomas Aquinas of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

St. Thomas Aquinas was in one of the other major tourneys and lost in the finals of the 32-team Blue Division at the prestigious Kissimmee Klassic in Kissimmee, Fla. The Raiders, who also dropped a game before the tourney to American Heritage, couldn’t get past Columbia (Lake City, Fla.) in a 1-0 loss. Erin Anderson led Columbia with two shutouts in the tourney and struck out six in the shutout win over St. Thomas Aquinas. She also knocked in the game’s only run with an RBI single in the fourth inning.

Columbia, which was No. 12 in last year’s final FAB 50 and won the Florida Class 6A state title, jumped up from No. 18 to No. 8 in this week’s rankings.

The third of the major tournaments held was the Livermore Stampede in Northern California. Although Amador Valley (which is nearby) skipped it to head down to Southern California (a smart move if the Dons want to have a better chance to finish No. 1 in the nation) national powerhouse Archbishop Mitty was in the field and won the title with a 6-0 win in the final over Livermore. Cal-bound Jazmyn Jackson was sensational for the Monarchs with three doubles and three runs scored in that game.

Mitty remained unbeaten after winning the tournament and hopped Hoover of North Canton, Ohio, going from No. 6 to No. 4, in this week’s rankings.

Here are this week’s rankings:
