Oklahoma Large School Champs Crowned

Saturday was championship day in Oklahoma as three games decided who would go home with state titles.  Two of the three contests saw schools win their first ever softball crown while the other made it No. 5.

OKLAHOMA HIGH SCHOOL STATE PLAYOFFS FINALS (LARGE SCHOOLS – Class 6A, 5A, 4A)

It was the last big week for fastpitch season in the Sooner State as the Oklahoma H.S. Fastpitch State Tournament (Large Schools Class 6A, 5A and 4A) started on Thursday and finished Saturday (Oct. 17-19).

The tournament was a single elimination formation that took place at Firelakes Ballpark in Shawnee, Okla. with the finals on Saturday afternoon and evening.

Here are the three championship game recaps:

Southmoore 3, Moore 1
Southmoore had never beaten Moore heading into Saturday, but picked a great time to make it happen as pitcher Katelyn Brown, who has committed to Southern Nazarene Univ., scattered four hits while striking out 11 in the SaberCats win.  It was the first softball state championship for the program.

Brown also provided the offense as she hit a two-run home run in the second off Jenna Lynn, the Moore star pitcher who has verballed to Oklahoma Baptist.

Moore (34-4) didn’t make it easy, though, as the Lions stranded five runners in scoring position including two in the final inning. Southmoore (31-4) looks to be loaded next year as all position players are underclassmen and if a replacement for Brown can be found the SaberCats could be a favorite to make it to the title game again.

CLASS 5A

Carl Albert 13, Edmond Deer Creek 0
Carl Albert has been in the championship game before, having won just two years ago and jumped early and often to blank Deer Creek 13-0 in a run-rule win.

Shortstop Morgan Heard set the tone when she lead off the game with a home run and the Titans pushed across another run in the second before blowing the game open in the third with eight runs due in part to four Deer Creek errors.

Abby Meador, who is headed to Oklahoma City Univ., struck out seven and walked five for Carl Albert which finished 34-1 in winning it’s fifth softball state championship.

CLASS 4A

Hilldale 7, Bethel 0

Hilldale pitcher Destiny Riddle came with one out of pitching a second no-hitter in as many days as she gave up a two-out double in the seventh to Bethel’s Mikayla Whitten, but closed the door to give the Hornets its first softball state championship.  The junior pitcher recorded 10 strikeouts for Hilldale (35-5).

Hilldale jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as Sarah Hughey hit a triple plating two runs.  She also homered in the fourth.  Bethel finished 27-12 on the year.
