Justus’ blog: homework on the road

Justus Perry, a 2016 infielder from Prior Lake, Minn., will be racking up some serious flight miles this year as she’ll be flying the 1,000 miles to and from Birmingham, Ala., to practice on the weekends with her new team, the Thunderbolts.  The Arizona State was a 2nd team “AAA” All-State pick this year as a freshman after leading her high school to the state championship game.

In this blog, she details how she’ll be getting her homework done on the run, or more accurately, in the air during her weekend flights for club ball!

My sophomore year in high school begins with more expectations, more training, and more swings.

The new school year also marks the beginning of long practices and endless hours of homework in the airport on my way to Birmingham, Ala. where I’ll practice with my new team, the Birmingham Thunderbolts.

Justus won't have too many weekends at home this year as she will be making 2,000 mile trips for club practice!

Every weekend we are able to, me and my dad will fly down to Birmingham, and since I won’t have weekends to do my homework that’s assigned on Friday and due Monday, I will have to carry it with me and do it at the airport or on the plane.

My Dad and I will usually leave on a Friday night after school and come back on Sunday night. He also has a part time job at Delta so we can fly for free (thank goodness!) to Birmingham and back.

It seems like me and my dad never get sick of the game and we never get tired of talking about it. I will not make all the practices for the Bolts during the week, but every weekend I can I am practicing morning, afternoon, and night with my new coaches.

Time management is also a very important factor when you are gone almost every weekend. This means less texting, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram and more homework!

It limits the amount of time you get to hang out with friends. It’s never fun not being able to hang out with friends, but your teammates become your closest friends, and your sisters.

I now have to take on the responsibilities of training on my own, too. Finding the time out of my busy schedule to hit off the tee, go up to the field and take ground balls, and to stay in shape during the week.

School is very important to me, and I know that most weekends I will have to bring my homework with me on the plane. Although doing homework on the road is nothing new (being from Minnesota), it is very challenging. There are many distractions, and you can easily get off task.

I’m truly blessed to have this opportunity and I’m going to seize every chance I can to get better and to learn as much as I can.
