Action kicked off Saturday at the PGF Labor Day Showcase in Crown Point, Ind. as teams in the 16U and 14U divisions each played a pair of games in pool play with squads representing most states in the Midwest and even coming from as far away as New Jersey .

Sunday will see more pool play and the start of the elimination games.

Jersey Intensity doubles up Southern Force in 14U opener

New Jersey Intensity 14U played the Southern Force-Bloomer team to kick off the PGF Labor Day Showcase 2015 in a match-up of two of the top organizations in the East.

The top of the first inning looked promising for the Force as the Kentucky-based team scored quickly on an overthrow to third, but the Intensity bats ended up being the difference in the game.

New Jersey Intensity’s Jayda Kearney helped put the Intensity ahead with a two-run homer in the first, followed by an RBI single in the third and another run batted in for the Intensity in the fourth.

Kearney also had two stolen bases and scored a run in the win over the Force, which won the ASA 14U Nationals this summer.

… But Force got revenge over Intensity in 16U play

While Jersey Intensity came out on top against the Southern Force in the younger play, the 16U contest was another story in a closer match-up.

Going into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Southern Force 16U squad trailed the Intensity 3-2, after New Jersey had extended its lead in the top of the fifth inning. FloSports All-American Brooke Langston led off with a line drive through the 5/6 hole, but the next two batters flew out deep to centerfielder and the threat ended with a ground ball back to the pitcher.

Trailing by one run, the Southern Force tied the game on an Abby Shoulders solo home run. Then Jaci Babbs lead off the sixth inning with an infield single and advanced to second on an overthrow to first.

Gracie Osbron then hit a deep flyout to right field that allowed Babbs to advance to third before Kentucky commit Mallory Peyton lined a shot into center to plate the go-ahead run.

Louisville commit Taylor Roby pitched the 7th for the Force, getting two swinging strikeouts and an infield pop up to close out the win.

16U favorite Beverly Bandits-Conroy falls to Sparks

The Beverly Bandits-Conroy is expected to be one of the top teams in the nation at the 16U level with standout pitchers Meghan Beaubien (2017, Michigan commit) and Sydney Supple (2019, Northwestern), but on Saturday the Bandits—coached by organization head and event director Bill Conroy--couldn’t slow down the bats of the Orland Park Sparks team.

The Bandits started out strong shutting the Sparks out in the first and got on top quickly in the bottom half of the first as Madison Ebeling hit a two-out single to right field and came home on an RBI single by Hannah Carson, a University of Michigan commit.

Nikki Cuchran stroked another RBI single to give the Bandits a 2-0 lead on the Sparks.

FloSports All-American Meghan Beaubien, who led the Bandits 16U team to a runner-up spot at this summer’s PGF Nationals, held the Sparks scoreless and hitless in the top of the second.

The Bandits added to their lead when Shelby Grimm singled and stole second and then came in on a Beaubien single to right.

The Sparks, however, rallied in its half of the 2nd when Kara Apato beat out an infield ground ball and Ashley Wood walked. Elana Wood then roped a two-run double to pull the Sparks within a run and Jessica Miklos also doubled in a run, and by the end of the inning the underdog had a 5-3 lead.

In the bottom of the 4th inning, Washington commit Maddy Banks doubled and scored on a Beaubien fielder’s choice to put the score at 5-4 Sparks, but that was all the offense the Bandits offense could muster, and the Orland Park team would add another run before closing out the win 6-4.
