New year, new Master Verbal Breakdown! We compiled a list of 172 new commits in the month of January that represent all three divisions as well as the NAIA, Junior Colleges, and Community Colleges. January’s commits span a whopping 37 conferences!
90% of the commits will play D1 college ball, but only 37 of the 172 will be in one of the Big Five conferences.
For the second month in a row, Oklahoma State led all Big Five schools with their number of verbals, this month committing four with half of their commits being 2020s. Tennessee locked in four commits this month as well.
Across all divisions and conferences, it was Appalachian State that committed the most players. The Mountaineers received verbal commitments from eight players, all of which hailed from either Lady Lightning Gold Team Miken, NC Challengers, or NC Lady Tigers.
As for club teams, Tulsa Elite stole the show with 15 commits. Interestingly, all 15 of Tulsa Elite’s commits are 2016s and none of them will be playing D1. By contrast, the Lady Lightning Gold Team Miken committed 13 players, all of whom willl play D1. Both Explosion- Greg and Gametime Stars saw six of their players commit in January.
A combined 61% of the commits were either 2016s or 2017s, with the 2017s having a slight advantage at 31%. We saw eight 2020s commit this month, which is double the number that committed in December. Of those eight, three verballed to the Big 12, two each committed to the Pac-12 and SEC, and one committed to a Colonial Athletic school.
For the third month in a row, the SEC lead the Big 5 in commits, and it actually tied for the most commits of any conference with the Sun Belt Conference. Nearly doubling the next closest of the Big 5, the SEC boasted 18 commits this month, with both the ACC and Pac-12 claiming 10 commits. The Big 12 got 7 commits while the Big Ten managed a mere two in January.
