Going Streaking: Butler CC Putting Together Historic Stretch Without A Loss
John Wooden might not be on the bench at Butler Community College. Bill Walton isn't in the starting lineup.

But as far as college sports winning streaks go, the Butler CC softball team is right there with the historic UCLA men's basketball team from the 1970s.

Butler CC swept Seward County on Monday to complete an undefeated season of 48-0. The 2016 NJCAA national champion Grizzlies have now compiled 86 straight victories. Wooden's UCLA squad won 88 in a row between 1970 and 1974.

If we're talking strictly NJCAA, Butler CC softball is in rarefied air. The Onondaga Community College men's lacrosse team owns the NJCAA record across all sports with 107 straight victories. So, the Grizzlies are within striking distance, though of course it won't be easy. That will mean another national championship and massive start to next season.

In women's sports, the UConn women's basketball team is synonymous with winning streaks. Geno Auriemma's squad compiled 111 consecutive wins between 2014 and 2017. That streak was, of course, snapped by Mississippi State in the Final Four last month.

None of the aforementioned teams have the ultimate winning streak in college sports, though. That title belongs to the Trinity (Conn.) men's squad team. Trinity won 252 matches in a row -- including 13 championships -- between 1998 and 2012. That is wild.

Butler CC might have a way to go before reaching the Bantams, but 86 in a row is historic in its own right. The Grizzlies will now host the Region VI Tournament, which starts Friday. Butler has a bye into the second round and will begin its postseason run in earnest Saturday.

There's an opportunity this weekend to tack onto that winning streak total. More importantly, a chance to start on a run toward a second straight national title.
