Rising Star: 2021 Emmy Guthrie Commits To The Oklahoma Dynasty

Freshman pitcher, Emmy Guthrie is geared up to join the Oklahoma dynasty. The Oklahoma native joins an all-star group of recruits who will likely see a championship in their future. We catch up with Guthrie and get her insight into her recruiting experience.

You travel many weekends out of the year to tournaments, showcases, and camps, how do you balance school and sports?

My academics always come first. It’s tough at times but I spend my time wisely. Most trips, I will study in the car while we travel and if we have any downtime between games I get my school work done.

Around what age did you know that you wanted to play collegiate softball?

Since I was five. I played basketball at that age as well, but it wasn’t what I loved. My dad, being a basketball coach, always had me in the gym but I was never as interested in it as softball. When I watched the girls in the World Series, I knew I wanted to be like them and I knew I wanted to play with the best someday. I knew then that I wanted to be a Sooner!

When did you start going to college camps to get your name out there in the recruiting scene? Why so young?

The first camp I attended was the University of Oklahoma between my sixth & seventh-grade year. My dad registered me in the OU camp as a freshman so that I could get in. I wanted to go at an early age because I’m always trying to get better. Working with the college coaches at their camps has been a great experience.

What do you like most about softball? What keeps that desire going to play at the highest collegiate level?

I love the hard work. It’s fun getting to push myself in practice and during games to become the best player I can be. The doubters and the negative people keep my hard work in overdrive. There will always be negative people in your life, but I decided to use them as my motivation.

What role does your family play in your travel softball?

My family means so much to me. I definitely would not be where I am without them. My family works hard to make sure I am able to achieve my dreams, and I can’t thank them enough for the sacrifices they make for me.

If you could give recruiting advice to those in your class or those younger, what would it be?

Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it, or you’re not good enough. Don’t stop pursuing your dreams because of what other people say you can or cannot do.  It will take lots of hard work, time, and commitment, but you can accomplish anything that you set your mind to. Also, start early. That way you can take your time figuring things out. And don’t try to do it alone. There’s way too much confusing stuff going on in the recruiting process to try to do it without someone who knows what they’re doing. I was lucky enough to have my NSR scout (Robby Wilson).

How many schools were recruiting you, how many offers did you have, what can you tell me about those schools, and why did you choose OU?

I chose the University of Oklahoma because it was where I’ve dreamed of playing since I was a little girl that couldn’t throw a strike. To have the opportunity to play for Coach Gasso and Coach Lombardi is my dream come true.
