Rising Star: 2019 Infielder Madison Jacobus Gets Behind The Lens

Rising star Madison Jacobus is not only extremely athletic and a complete wall at second base, but she also has a keen eye for photography. Her pictures are good — really good.

When Jacobus isn’t putting work in on the field with her Torrance (CA) Bishop Montgomery High School or Firecrackers club teams, you can find her behind the lens capturing the world around her with her friends.

“I started getting into it my freshman year of high school and towards the end of freshman year, I started getting better at it,” said Jacobus, who is No. 58 on the FloSoftball Hot 100 for 2019.

This is Jacobus' second year playing on Tony Rico’s legendary Firecrackers team. She is committed to Utah and couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the Utes' program.

“They weren’t well known when they joined the Pac-12, so seeing how well they have progressed throughout the past few years really caught my eye.”

Stanford had always been Jacobus' dream school, but everything changed once she stepped foot onto Utah’s campus.

When asked about her decision, she replied, “I ended going to Utah on my official visit before my visit to Stanford and just fell in love. You get this feeling when you go to a school and you know it’s the school for you. It felt like home. I loved all the coaches and the campus. When I saw the field, I saw myself on that field.”

FloSoftball: How would you describe your family?

Jacobus: Busy. Really busy. My dad works for LAPD, my mom is a nurse, and my brother plays club soccer. So, between all of us, it’s hard trying to figure out when we can spend time with each other. It’s something we’ve all gotten used to and we somehow make it work.

What is like having your dad work for LAPD?

I have a lot of emotions about it, especially with all the Thomas fires going on in LA. He was called in to help evacuate people and that really made realize what was happening over there. All his stories are pretty crazy.

Other than your family, who is your biggest role model?

Definitely my grandma. She’s really into her faith and is always putting herself before others. Just the fact that we’re always taken care of is really neat.

Any superstitions on the field?

I have these bracelets that I wear and I always have to put them on in a certain order.

Have you had any setbacks that kept you from playing?

I had a minor tear in my meniscus last fall, and I think getting back from that was pretty hard because I was super limited to doing certain stuff. As a slapper, I’m always wanting to get faster, but I was having trouble running on it without it being uncomfortable. I went from not playing to trying to get back to the same level that I was consistently playing on.

How do you get pumped before games?

I’m always mentally preparing myself for a game. On the drive over to the game, I always listen to music and it puts me in the right mindset, so when I step on the field I’m ready for the game. If I were to pick one song though that helps me do that, it would have to be "HUMBLE." by Kendrick Lamar.

What is your go-to pregame snack?

I would have to say apples and peanut butter.

What is one of your favorite memories from travel ball?

Probably winning Platinum PGF two years ago. In the beginning of the year we were struggling, but once Colorado hit, it was a huge turning point for us. The whole ride during PGF was just incredible.

What is your favorite Netflix show?

Without a doubt "Stranger Things."

Who is your favorite character on there and why?

I’m going to have to go with Eleven. She doesn’t talk, but she has a huge presence throughout the show.

What is your favorite movie?

"The Sandlot." I love it so much.

If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?

I really want to go to Athens, Greece. I always see beautiful pictures of all the white buildings and super blue water. Just seeing that in person would be a dream.
