Conference play is slowly getting underway across the country, which means rivalries are being renewed and the level of competition is increasing. In the Pac-12 that meant college softball’s last two undefeated teams finally lost over the weekend, showing just how competitive things are going to be out on the West Coast in 2018.

Of course, plenty else happened in the NCAA softball landscape so let’s get to the highlights:

Last two unbeaten teams fall: #1 Washington and #3 UCLA both lose on Saturday

Just like that, there are no more undefeated teams in NCAA softball. 

Following No. 13 Arizona State’s 2-0 defeat of top-ranked and previously 28-0 Washington on Saturday afternoon, third-ranked UCLA fell to No. 6 Oregon mere hours later after starting 2018 with 25 straight wins.

The Huskies struck out 11 times against Sun Devils starter Giselle Juarez, who went the distance while allowing just three hits. It would appear that UW simply ran into an ace on fire in the form of Juarez, as Saturday’s start marked her seventh straight outing without allowing a run. Her scoreless streak now spans 46 innings.

The Bruins took their first “L” as Oregon put them in a deep hole early, with the Ducks jumping out to a 7-0 lead through five innings on Saturday evening. UCLA rallied late to cut things to 7-5, even bringing the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but Oregon starter Miranda Elish got Brianna Tautalafua to ground into a fielder’s choice to end things. Elish struck out nine and moved to 11-0 on the season.

Fortunately for Washington, its losing ways didn’t last long. The Huskies shut out ASU on Sunday behind Taran Alvelo’s 13 strikeouts and will finish out the series on Monday. UCLA was less fortunate, as the Bruins lost to Oregon once again on Sunday, this time in dramatic walk-off fashion. Oregon took two out of three in the series.

The biggest takeaway? The Pac-12 is going to be bonkers this year.

#2 Florida drops two of three against #10 Georgia

The 10th-ranked Bulldogs took advantage of home-field against second-ranked Florida to win the series in Athens, Georgia, over the weekend. Friday’s contest ended in a thrilling walk-off homer by Alyssa DiCarlo, her second dinger of the game:

The Dawgs whacked four homers on the day, and the victory pushed their win streak to 24 games. Georgia made that streak 25 games on Saturday, surprisingly run-ruling the Gators 11-1 in five innings as DiCarlo added yet another homer. Florida did manage to avoid a sweep on Sunday, winning 5-1.

Rutgers wins 15-inning marathon game against Florida Atlantic

Two games for the price of one! Fans who stuck around for all 15 innings of Rutgers' 5-4 win over FAU on Wednesday in Boca Raton, Florida, were treated to three hours and 15 minutes of intense, back-and-forth softball action. Both teams scored a run in the eighth and 12th innings before Erin Collins got the Scarlet Knights the lead for good in the top of 15th:

Florida Atlantic actually had the tying run on third with two outs in the bottom half of the 15th, but apparently, the softball gods decided they had had enough as Kaitlyn Burke struck out to end the never-ending game. It was the longest contest in program history for both schools.

Cal State Fullerton’s Sammie Vandiver robs Nebraska of a homer

It was a rough weekend for the Titans as they hosted the Easton Invitational (they went 1-4), but this grab by left fielder Sammie Vandiver sure was nice to watch:

Oklahoma dominates Easton Invitational, has won 15 in a row

I realize they haven’t been playing the toughest schedule of late, but the defending champion Sooners appear to be doing just fine after losing two games in February. Top-ranked Oklahoma outscored its opponents 43-5 over the weekend in Fullerton, California. Here was one of those runs courtesy of Fale Aviu:

The Sooners play another game Monday against Cal State Northridge before kicking off Big 12 play this upcoming Friday against Texas Tech.

Auburn wins the series after dropping game one against Alabama

The bats struggled to get going for both No. 16 Bama and No. 11 Auburn on Sunday, but the host Tigers triumphed in game three to close out the series in dramatic fashion with a 2-1 win. Down by one, Alyssa Rivera hit a rocket over the fence to tie up the game in the seventh inning. 

With Taylon Snow on second, Casey McCrackin singled up the middle to score the winning walk-off run.
