The Story Behind Postseason Anna Shelnutt

Florida State captured Game 1 of the Women's College Softball World Series with a 1-0 win Monday in Oklahoma City, outlasting the Huskies in a pitcher’s duel between UW's Gabbie Plain and FSU’s Meghan King.

Anna Shelnutt, nicknamed “Postseason Anna,” broke open the game for the Seminoles in the sixth inning after hitting a solo shot over the left-center-field fence off Plain.

Altogether, Shelnutt is batting .312 with 20 RBIs and eight home runs this postseason, most notably a two-run blast in Florida State's Game 2 victory over LSU in the Super Regionals and a walk-off homer in the Seminoles' win against Pitt in the ACC Championship.

Shelnutt’s home run on Monday was just the second run Plain gave up at Women’s College World Series.

A redshirt junior, King tossed a gem for the 'Noles, scattering five hits, collecting six strikeouts, and shutting out the Huskies for the first time all tournament. Meanwhile, senior third baseman Jessie Warren made the most spectacular play of the tournament so far as she laid out to snag a popped-up bunt by Trysten Melhart to turn a double play off Taryne Atlee at first base.

Florida State enters Game 2 on Tuesday night at 8 ET one win away from its first-ever WCWS title. The third game in the championship series (if necessary) will start at 8:30 PM on Wednesday.
