Good news for college players who want to transfer. NCAA Division I student-athletes will now have the ability to transfer without granted permission from their current schools, effective October 15, 2018. 

Before student-athletes would have to wait for their university to grant permission to contact other coaches, but that rule will soon be eliminated. 

Student-athletes can notify their current school of their decision to transfer and the school is required to enter their name into the national transfer database within two business days. The “notification-of-transfer” model allows coaches from other universities to contact the student-athlete once their name has been entered into the national transfer database.

Former Coastal Carolina football player Nicholas Clark, who now represents the Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee on the Division I Council, agreed with the recent policy change. 

“This creates a safe place for student-athletes to have a conversation with their coaches and makes the whole process more transparent,” Clark said. “This will clean the process up and give more influence and flexibility to the student-athlete.”
