Week 9: High School FAB 50 Rankings

By Kevin Shelton

This week's poll has been the most stable this season to date, especially at the top where there was no change in the first 18 teams. Each of the nation's best continue to win, many teams making deep pushes into their respective playoffs including Florida, Texas, and California.

Florida reached the region semi-final stage in each class, meaning that 16 teams are still in the running for the top spot. #13 Apopka is alive in the biggest Florida class, 9A.  8A is where many of the top-ranked Florida squads will face off sooner or later.  #2 Lakewood Ranch (FL) is scheduled to face off against #23 Eastlake (FL) on Tuesday.  #5 Winter Springs is on collision course with "Next In" Bartow in the Region Final round, if they both survive. 1A Trenton (#20) remains unbeaten in the divisions State Quarter Final.

All of the ranked Texas squads survived the Region Quarter Finals and have advanced to top 16 teams in each class.  6A squads Klein Collins (#7) will be battle tested against a pitching dominant Belton team this week. Keller (#9) and #44 Eaton finished 1st and 2nd in the same district, with Eaton's only two losses this season coming at the hands of Keller. If both win this week, they'll play for a spot in the State Final Four.  #14 Katy and "Next In" Deer Park could also meet for a berth at the State Tournament. In the 5A Division, #6 Dripping Springs and #11 Forney have an excellent chance to reach the State Tournament. If both #16 Barbers Hill and #17 Angleton survive another week, they'll battle for the right to go to Austin. Both Barbers Hill and Deer Park won in walk-off fashion. Deer Park scored eight runs in their final at-bat to advance.

In California, the CIF Southern Section tournament has already provided some matchups of top teams, with a few more to come.  #3 Norco won two games last week in convincing fashion including a 9-0 shutout of previous #44 Orange Lutheran, who had stopped Pacifica. Norco will battle Huntington Beach in the semi-final on Tuesday.  #42 Great Oak squeezed by "Next In" Santa Margarita 8-7 to reach the other semi-final. Great Oak will face off against "Next In" Gahr.

#8 Neshoba Central (MS) has reached the Mississippi 5A State Championship Series.

#21 Hartsville (SC) and #27 Byrnes (SC) have reached the 4A and 5A State Championship Series respectively.  Both series are scheduled to begin Monday, May 13.

Arizona's Pinnacle will play for the 6A state title, Monday as well.

Five teams join the poll this week with #42 Great Oak moving back into the rankings.  Eaton (TX) debuts at #44 followed by Puyallup (WA), Mt. Vernon (OH) and St. Joseph (CT).
