North Mankato, MN (June 29, 2019)– The Cleveland Comets (7-12) picked up a close one-run win, 3-2, over the Aussie Peppers of Minnesota (4-12) in the first contest of a four-game set between the two squads at Caswell Park.
The Peppers opened up the scoring in the first inning when Stacey Porter scored after Carmie Sorensen stayed in the run-down long enough on an attempted steal to second allowing Porter to score from third with two outs.
Cleveland responded in the third inning after Sammy Marshall stole her 15th base of the 2019 campaign and advanced to third on an error with nobody out. Later in the frame, Lilli Piper smacked a 2-out RBI single to right field tying the game up at one run apiece.
The Peppers scored the next run as Porter ripped an RBI single to centerfield scoring Stacey McManus in the bottom half of the third.
The Comets took their first lead of the contest in the top of the fourth inning after Marshall swiped her second bag of the contest. Tori Vidales delivered a 2-RBI double to left centerfield scoring Marshall and Amanda Sanchez. Those were the go-ahead RBI’s in the contest as Sierra Hyland came on in relief for Cleveland. Hyland tossed four innings and didn’t allow a baserunner while striking out eight as the Comets earned their seventh win of 2019.
