Two former IBJJF World Champions are talking about a potential series of super fights, with Felipe Pena laying down the challenge to Nicholas Meregali on Instagram. After Meregali initially said he wanted a fight with Pena in the gi, Pena has responded wanting a match in BOTH gi and no-gi. Nicholas has already responded, saying he will respond to the offer when he feels like it.

"Nicholas recently gave an interview saying he wanted to fight me in the gi… I'm currently focused on nogi, training, evolving and waiting for my fight against Gordon to happen. Until then, I really had no plans to put on the gi, but since Gordon was come back fighting but apparently he's avoiding fighting me, I'd like to challenge Nicholas to have a nogi fight in the coming months and a gi fight at the beginning of next year. A 2 fight contract! What's up @nicholasmeregali are you up for it?"

The match up would signify the bout that we missed out on in the 2021 IBJJF World Championship open class finals, after Nicholas Meregali was disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct in his ultra-heavyweight semifinal. Felipe Pena would go on to win the final by walkover, but was later disqualified and stripped of his medal after a positive PED test.

Nicholas, fresh off of his big victory at the IBJJF Grand Prix over Victor Hugo, responded already on Instagram. Citing his recent run of wins fighting in both styles, Meregali has said he will take time to recover, heal his body, then respond to any challenges.
