Lorenzo Norman was a bit of an unknown at the NCAA level entering the 2023 CKLV. That changed when Norman, who entered the tournament with a 1-0 record, beat high-powered Oklahoma State freshman Brayden Thompson in his opening bout and followed that up with a 4-2 victory over 2021 NCAA champion Shane Griffith.

After a scoreless first period in their round of 16 match, Griffith chose bottom. He was unable to escape from Norman who demonstrated top abilities beyond his years with a two-minute ride of the normally mat-savvy Griffith. In the third period, Norman and Griffith exchanged reversals, but Griffith's reversal came after Norman had secured his riding time advantage. Griffith gave up an escape to Norman and nearly took him down, but sound defense allowed Norman to hang on to his lead and ultimately win the bout 4-2.

Shane Griffith and Lorenzo Norman could have been teammates at Stanford this season if not for Griffith's transfer to Michigan this summer. During his time in Palo Alto, Griffith won an NCAA title that played a significant role in keeping Stanford's wrestling program along with ten other varsity sports that were on the chopping block back in 2021.

Norman now moves to 3-0 on the season and has advanced to the CKLV quarterfinals where he will face former Blair Academy high school teammate Danny Wask of Navy.
