The winners of the 2023 FloGrappling Awards, presented by Kingz Kimonos, are here! We honor athletes from five different categories, given to those who earned the most fan votes. The results are in and the following winners have emerged from the pools of worthy contenders.


Male Grappler Of The Year

Winner - Nicholas Meregali

Nicholas finished his 2023 with a flawless 14-0 record, 10 submissions, with both stellar success in both gi and no-gi competition. In his return to the IBJJF mats, he was utterly dominant at both the Pan Championships and Grand Prix, including defeating Victor Hugo in a super fight of open class champions. In his evolving no-gi campaign, Nicholas won in high profile matches against Felipe Pena, Kaynan Duarte, and Roberto Abreau - rising as high as third pound for pound in the rankings. His sights in 2024 are firmly set on ADCC gold.

Female Grappler Of The Year

Winner - Ffion Davies

When the lights shone brightest, Ffion Davies stood out - winning world championships in both gi and no-gi, including double gold at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championships to close the calendar. Her run through 2023 included a WNO championship showdown with Jasmine Rocha - one she won, in one of the most talked about women's matches of the year. Ffion is getting closer to all-time great status, and has big plans for 2024.

Breakthrough Grappler Of The Year

Winner - Jozef Chen

Jozef Chen is the breakthrough grappler of the year, stamping himself in 2023 as not just an athlete to watch but a real contender to win it all at ADCC 2024. His 2023 Trials run is one of the most impressive ever, defeating veterans like Tommy Langaker, Oliver Taza, and Mateusz Szczecinski. The B-Team Bull was also one of the athletes on the winning Quintet team and had a stellar run through AIGA Champion's League as a member of the Al Leone team.

Match Of The Year

Winner - Mica Galvão vs Jay Rodriguez, Tezos WNO 20: Night of Champions

At Tezos WNO: Night of Champions, the welterweight championship was on the line in a 4-man bracket featuring some of the best, most exciting athletes in the world. In the first round, Mica Galvão and Jay Rodriguez turned in one of the best matches in recent memory with 15 furious minutes of action. There were near submissions, incredible escapes, electrifying throws & takedowns - this match had two of the best in the world doing it all. In the end, it was Mica emerging victorious and capturing the belt that night but both men put on a performance that stands above the rest in 2023.

Submission Of The Year

Winner - Mica Galvão's Flying Armbar, Tezos WNO 20: Night of Champions

How do you follow up the fight of the year? Mica does it by hitting the submission of the year! Mica used one of his famous flying armbars to launch directly into a finish against PJ Barch in the finals of the WNO Welterweight Championship bracket. For the fluidity of technique - and the level of opponent - Mica's armbar is the 2023 submission of the year.
