Recruiting Question of the Week (6/29)

Each week we take a question from a softball player, parent or coach and pass on to our long-time contributor, Cathi Aradi, one of the most knowledgeable people in softball when it comes to the recruiting process.
If you’d like to ask Cathi a question, e-mail us at brentt.eads@flosports.tv and we’ll pass it along.
Today, we learn about talking to coaches at a camp if you’re not yet in high school…

Recruiting Question: What is the first thing a coach looks for in a player? – Annie Moore, USA Victory 14U
Cathi’s Answer: This is a great question, Annie, but it’s also a very tough one to answer!
The reason is that there are 1,200 college teams out there, and coaches really differ in what “grabs their attention” when considering a player.
Grades always come first because if you don’t have the grades and test scores, you aren’t recruitable.
But after that, there’s no set rule. Some coaches are more interested in the physical player than anything else. Is she big and strong? Is she athletic? Does she throw the ball hard or hit the ball far? Are her skills well developed?

Other coaches look for more subtle things. Does she know softball? Does she know how to win? (This is a big one these days as college coaches struggle to develop a winning mindset in players who have played mostly showcase events throughout their high school travel seasons.)
Many coaches look for a player’s love of the game because they know that without that, she’s not going to want to do all the work it takes to succeed at a high level in college.
I know I repeat this mantra over and over, but that’s because it’s the gospel truth! All college coaches look for players who will make an impact on their teams…whether they’re D-I, D-II, NAIA, D-III or JC.
So if you can find a coach who’s looking for what you have to offer, you great increase your chances of being recruited!
